If You Could Bring Back A Custom From The Past, Which Would It Be?

I'm not generally one to lament times past, or wax poetic about "The Good Old Days."
In truth, despite the many problems currently facing humanity, I'm actually quite happy to be here on this planet right now.

That being said some recent musings make me pose the question, if you could bring back any historical custom or tradition, and money were no object, which would it be?

For me, I have always figured the nobles of yore had it right. The husband and wife generally had separate bedrooms. To me, it makes sense, everyone should have a place they feel is their own private sanctuary.

Plus, I'm often prone to insomnia. I sleep better when I'm alone. In part, because every little noise made by the person next to me is likely to wake me up, and in part because I'm afraid to toss about too much for fear of waking him.

Oh.. and I like sprawling out in the bed too :p

I dont know if you do the same, but I spread out in bed, it is terrible, my gf's said. (hehe).

Well, I dont know, I think things are fine the way they are, but maybe I'd like to have the respect to the sages back. Well, not that the old ones were always respected, but they do have some wisdom (and funny stories to share).

Love the thread DW, great idea, should be interesting. :)

@LA: I was sort of thinking along those lines.

My general thing that I would want brought back, is respect towards your fellow man (in that sense meaning man or woman). So many disgusting things are being done, and in fact, where I live there has been an explosion in the number of old people being bashed and having their money stolen, and left with massive bruises. We need that respect back.

Unfortunately, I can't think of any actual customs, but hopefully I will later...

I would like to see the calmth return. People used to have the time and they took it.

Nowadays, people have to do this and still want to do that and need to see certain things before they die. Nonsense.

Each to their own. I prefer loving and caring on free will, but hey, being subservient is sometimes free will too...

Anyhoo...

I wont talk anymore!

Yes, but that isn't a tradition or custom from the past (no matter how much Mag might like to romanticise history :D )

*cough *cough* Spam on topic please ;)

I'd like to see the grand old tradition of physically abusing poltiical and religious leaders who don't perform as expected. There were popes that were mobbed and had dung thrown at them from balconies, and kings and lords who were mobbed and driven from "their own" cities. It's high time the descendant of those folk got over the drivel about respect "one should show one's elected/appointed officials" and engaged in lively debate involving clubs, knives, and buckets of tar. ;)

Well those renaissance popes were sick and depraved, but they had taste
So I say patronage of the arts, let rich people have a modicum of taste, or at least the restraint not to force their artistic views on artists, and have artists create modern day version of the Sistine chapel and such.

Sorry DW. :) I would agree with Venom on the issue of respect and something linked to that is manners. Very few people have manners anymore. I am not talking about uppity do i use this fork or that spoon type of stuff. But the simple ability to say thank you and please. Didn't see it Europe. Don't see it in NYC

I have to agree with Fable completely: the strength of the 'mob' has been almost completely destroyed. Presidents, Kings, Prime Ministers, etc. are meant tools of the public, not the other way around, and if the people didn't like their king for whatever reason they had the strength to overthrow him. Not so much anymore.

I'd also have to comment on, similar (or exactly the same :p ) to what Ik said, that I'd like to do away with the hustle-and-bustle of modern society. It gets to be too much.

I'd like to go back to when women appreciated having doors opened for them and such, instead of getting all uppity about feminism. I don't open doors for them just because they're women: I open doors for them because they're people, and I'm polite.

Oh certainly, amen to that.

It seems being polite is a sign of degrading someone.

Women want to meet Gentlemen, yet Gentlemen aren't allowed.

I can train women to my needs perfectly well myself, thank-you-very much. :p

I agree with Fable. Good one there. ;)

As for my own...There was a time when humans had a more appropriate view of their place on this planet. This species does not "own" this place, or any of the other species living on it. The sheer arrogance involved in such a notion astounds me, and I have a deep and sincere wish that it was gone, and humanity when back to being humble creatures who still knew the fear of the other creatures around them and an awe of nature herself. That would make me happy.

That or all the pretty kitties attacking people in their sleep to show them some humility.

If Fable and Magrus' ideas happened, this would be the dark ages or something. Ooh, about my wish for a jousting match with George W...:mischief:

I'd have done quite well in the Dark Ages I think. I'm intelligent, I can be persuasive, and I'm not above using deciet, treachery and brute force to get what I want.

Indeed. If I could bring back an old custom, it would be riding horses everywhere!

No, the Renaissance. In the Middle Ages, there was a lot more experimentation with forms of government than modern pop culture would have you believe. The really all-powerful monarch/lord/pontiff stuff didn't take off until the Renaissance.

As for Shrub, if his character was the same you'd never have jousted with him. He would have poisoned your food the night before, and blamed it all on an arch-enemy of his. :D

well if that isn't a wet blanket then I don't know what is. :D Fab, the Renaissance, of course.
