"What would this place be like if the human race was never here?"

DW's thread about past customs led me to a certain thought. I asked Lina what she would have brought back, and she had no answer, but demanded to know mine. I told her, and we got to discussing my response. It led me to the thought of "What would this place be like if the human race was never here?"
Would another species have risen up, raped this planet, enslaved the species they found useful, and killed or driven off all of those they found to be inconveniant? Or would a balance between the other species have been maintained?
Thoughts on this anyone?

It'd be a helluva lot greener. I'm also inclined to believe rather utopian, in a natural sense: I don't see any animals being capable of pulling off 'domination' of any sort. Apes are obviously the most likely (we're supposed to have evolved from them after all), but outside of them are any other animals really capable both physically and mentally? The only one's I might bet on (other than apes) would be felines (tigers, lions, etc.), for their intelligence, or wolves/dogs for the pack mentality (which also exists in other creatures, but they're the first that comes to mind). Maybe certain sea-bound beings, but they are just that, sea-bound.
No, in all honesty we've screwed this place up ourselves: can't see anyone else to logically blame it on.

Sorry, big edit... See above. I pressed "post" by accident.

depending on the color of the dominant species, its needs and what not then possibly.Even if Homo sapiens sapiens sapiens did not exist some large predator would have risen up and become a dominant force, however if they owuld have created civilizations, and traveld around the globe? who knows, it all depends on the random mutations of genes that change things in species, creating improved species, its evolution, completely random stuff at times, while necesary traits pass along thorugh Survival of the Fittest rule, th world could ahve ended up being just one vast nature preserve, maybe the UFO's lil green men would have made us into a Zoo.
Heres a thought: This place could have been settled by extra terresrtials if Humans werent here to kinda of ward them off so to speak.

@ Tony, I've done that before.

I agree with you, totally. Although, with mutations, eventually I do believe a species would come to the point it may dominate the area it found most conveniant for it's living. The dinosaurs claimed the place because the continents were all one giant land mass at that point. I could easily see tigers for example establishing themselves as the top of the food chain in there particular corner of the world.
@ Phreddie, That is an interesting thought. If I were capable of space travel, I'd blow past this place once I saw what had been done to it by our species to be honest.

It's kind of a broad topic to be honest, because it's impossible to imagine what difference our being here has made on the rest of Earth's denizens. Maybe the Dodo bird would've been totally dominant if we weren't around. Who knows. Man, it would be alot better place though.

My kind of Man.
Well, I don't believe another race has the Physical and mental capabilities to rule the world. But that could just be human bigottedness.

New person! Hi new person! You're completely correct.

Aargh! very deep question for ten to three in the morning!! I guess we fill an evolutionary niche, eventually another high inteligence tool using creature would develop, likely another prmiate, given the known inteligence of gorillas etc.....
Or from anothe point of view, if we weren't around, we wouldn't have killed off or scared away all the faerie folk....

Where would your beloved horsies run free? :speech:
@ MAg: Oh totally, they'd have a definite chip on their shoulder about being the only bird that couldn't fly. They'd invent a plane faster than you could down a shot of Jack on New Years.

Surely the Dodos would ride Pogos using yoyos?

I don't think a lot would've changed up to this day. Sure, the dodo would still be alive along with some other species and some forests would still be there where you'd expect them, but other than that, I think this planet would be much like it was in the year 500 or maybe 1200, which is fairly recently in the history of Earth and most species, including Man.
Before that time, there weren't enough people or technologies to make significant changes to the environment.
I think the differences would be limited to the average numbers of predators per km², because some animals weren't being eaten by humans. Just that kind of stuff.

We're keeping you sir.
Yes, unicorns Athena.

I'm not big on jungles though. Too hot and wet. Ruins the fun of becoming hot and wet if it's always hot and wet, no?

 Hahaha
Well naturally, but once they learned how to weld they'd abandon the pogo sticks and hop in a cessna. They'd keep the yoyo's though.
