I recently started playing Baldur's Gate II. I havn't got very far, but I know some where I have seen a mod that would allow me to play through BGI then onto BGII. I've never played BGI but hear very good things about it. I also like the idea of playing through both sagas with the same character. Getting a copy of BGI isn't an option for me, so I was hoping someone might know where I might find the mod I'm looking for.

What you're looking for has been discussed in this forum: BGT, or the Baldur's Gate Trilogy. It also includes BP, Big Picture, incorporating several large mods. You can find out more about it, here. Feel free to ask for opinions, if you'd like.

These mods (BG1Tutu & BGT) require you to own both BG1 and BG2. The mods do not provide the BG1 content.

If you don't have BG1 already you'll be out of luck.
