Okay, so I'm in the Kobold cave. I use the four levers in proper order to open the northern gate. I then come to another gate down the corridor that I cannot get open. I must deal with this dragon before I can advance the plot. Any words of advise??

spoilers so highlight:
you have to explore the whole caves and speak to the captive kobold and then kobold chieftain (and possibly fight him). once you have done that you will get access to the next bit, with the dragon. you don't need to fight him, just listen to what he has to say then make you mind up on what you want to do. if you choose to do his quest, he will give you something to make the fight in the gnoll lair easier. if you do a similar thing there you can also trick them into giving you something to make the dragon easier to kill if you later decide to fight him.

Exploit the beauty of the RPG. Save, do what comes naturally, reload, and try something else.
In the game as in life, killing a dragon is always a good idea, but sometimes its a practical impossility.

If you were worried about long term consequences, I don't think there are any.

I have the same problem, which hasn't been by the above posters
In the cave with the obvious chest/portcullis trap, there are 4 levers in adjoining caves. I pulled all at random and somehow managed to open the first door. The next one is closed, and the order in the walkthrough
NE - SW - SE - NW doesn't work
All that seems to happen is if I pull the NE lever the first door closes, if I then pull it again the 1st door (only) opens
Any advice?

Spoiler
There are floor levers inside the doors that open remotely. I found if you get the door open then throw that nearest lever it resets the active lever in one of the remaining rooms where the levers didn't do anything. Try each of the remaining levers until one works. If you use a lever that was already activated to open a door, it will reset all the doors.
Took me awhile to figure it out.
