This is a very slow moving board (only 3 updated threads today, only 8 yesterday) so double posting after only 20 minutes is being too impatient.
As for your question, I have found Enflame, Physical Shield and Magic Power to be the best-spent experience early on. Divine Fury will be your highest damage later on, but it is slower to cast and takes more mana, so I would max Enflame before starting on Divine Fury (substitute Infernal Wrath if you are going evil).
1st Tier Spells:
- Magic Power: Very obvious. More mana = more spells to cast. (not really a spell but important anyway)
- Physical Shield: Also very obvious, it keeps you alive, let's you focus on mana instead of health and keeps your combat multiplier up.
- Enflame: Area spell, good damage, quick to cast, reasonable mana, knocks people down.
- Divine Fury/Infernal Wrath: After you max Enflame start working on this. Higher power than Enflame but takes longer to cast and costs more mana. Not really needed in the early stages of the game.
2nd Tier Spells:
- Slow Time: Helps slow down enemies. Useful whether you do spells, melee or ranged.
- Heal Life: Useful in case your Physical Shield drops or if you need to heal a mercenary or one of the people you are escorting.
- Fireball: Good ranged spell. More damage than Enflame, but takes longer to charge it (which is why I choose Enflame as my primary).
Non-spell Skills:
- Only use Strength and Skill experience for these skills. Do not use general experience unless you don't need any more spells right now. The amount of experience you need to max all spells is MUCH higher than to max all Str/Skl skills. If you aren't planning to max all (or most) spells, then you can spend some additional experience on the Str/Skl stuff.
- I would recommend at least Physique 3 so you can wield some of the larger weapons.
- Try to max Health (more health means less chance of dying).
- I don't know if Toughness impacts how much damage is taken by Physical Shield, but I would try to get this high (max if possible) just in case.
- I would recommend high speed so if you have to use a weapon you can attack quickly.
- I would recommend at least 3 Guile so you can use trading to get decent money.
- I wouldn't worry about Accuracy much. Get it to 3 or so then raise it when the others are maxed.
Additional Spells:
- Lightning: It can hit multiple targets at high level, but I think between Enflame and Fireball you don't need Lightning as much. Just a personal opinion.
- Ghost Sword: Can be useful to draw attention and give you some extra crown control.
- If you plan on doing some work with melee or ranged, getting some of these to 3 or 4 can be helpful: Berserk, Assassin Rush, Multi Strike, Multi Arrow.
- Force Push: I think with the knockback from Enflame this loses some of it's benefits.
- I haven't used the other spells so I can't comment, but as a starting point the ones above give you a pretty good idea of a generalist spell caster.
I'm not the most experienced person here, but I think the above gives you a general feeling of how to get going. Early in the game you need to have a decent bow and weapon (and armour) since your magic will be pretty pathetic. And some monsters (like rock trolls) are just easier to put up a Physical Shield and then go whack away at them. I would recommend getting Skorm's Bow as early as you can. This thread has a bunch of information including my recommendation for how to get it with as little chance for failure as possible.
Hope that helps.
