I bought Baldur's Gate quite some time ago, and had no trouble installing it on my old computer. I tried to install it on this computer (with the Windows XP OS) for the first time recently, but it doesn't work. When I click on the "Install" option, a window pops up with "16 bit Windows Subsystem" in the title bar, and the following message:

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

Is this a known occurence, and if so, is there a way to remedy it? Thanks.

P.S.: Baldur's Gate 2 installs with no trouble.

it was ages ago when i installed baldurs gate on my pc so can't remember if i had any difficulty, but have you tried opening the cd explorer window, right clicking on the icon for the installer then changing the compatibility to an earlier version of windows? dunno if it will work but its worth a try

What you suggested didn't work, but thank you for trying to help. On a lark, I went to the System32 folder to see just what the autoexec file was... and realized it wasn't there. I did a search on my computer for it, found it in a different folder, and copied it into System32. Lo and behold, I'm installing as I type this.

I did get another pop-up window saying that the setup program wasn't able to run a file needed to install the game, but I'm a plow-ahead-regardless-of-the-consequences kind of guy, and the installation worked fine anyway. Hurray!
