Okay, b4 I do the Sir Sarles quest, is the MoD+2(Mace of Disruption) better than the XP from the quest and the follow up quest for the Dawn Ring? I have the MoD+1 and am ready to do the illithium quest. I have the Skullcrusher+3 mace, Flail of Ages+3, and soon will have Crom Faeyr. Do I really need the +2 MoD?

Pardon me for asking this, but don't you want to enjoy as many quests as possible?

How do you except us to know what you "really need" when you don't tell us diddly squat about your party, goals, mods, other items and so on and so forth. That's just stupid -_-.

I'll try it anyway! No, you don't need it, but it's a good item when fighting undead. That's all I can do with the info given me. Kinda. ;p

I think it's worth it. My biggest pet peeve in D&D, be it BG or pnp, is level draining. It just annoys the heck out of me. Consequently, I get the MoD as soon as possible, just so I can have a fighter wade in and smack vampires around without fear of getting level drained.

Yes, Fable, this is why I am asking the question. I want to do as many quests as possible. I also know it is cool to get all the nifty items and you can't get this item and do the quests tied to it.

And Thrifalas, I have not insulted you in any way so I would appreciate it if you didn't call me stupid. Grown ups don't do that sort of thing. You could have made your point without the stupid remark.

Thank you.

@P - I agree, as many quests with as many items as possible!

In my game, Minsc used IMoD+2 as a backup weapon, for protection in various Undead situations... all the way thru ToB, in fact. Very worthy weapon to have, imo. As for the Sarles quest, and 'both' illithiums...

Big Spoiler:

Give the priest the fake illithiums, as he is a knucklehead, and keep the real stuff for Cromwell. Quest completed, cool item obtained! A little less XP finishing the quest this way, but chickenfeed compared to obtaining millions of XP throughout the rest of the game.

Unless you're an "it" I never did call you stupid, just that last line you wrote, which I still find stupid. There's a big difference between finding someone - and a line someone wrote - stupid. However, point taken, and yes I guess that was unecessary.

Calm down, calm down

it's not worth it! buy him a drinkand agree to differ.

you can still do the quest even after using the illithium for the MoD - you take the quest, get the illithium, use it with the weaponsmith, go back to the ore merchant and buy the substitute. Sir Sarles rejects the substitute and you go back to the temple of Helm where the top boyo says that he is pleased that the imperfection of the human spirit is reflected in the slightly tarnished surface of the ore. BTW mentioning he is glad that nobody paid that pompous Sir Sarles to create something.

as for level draining - there is an amulet that protects against it - as does "negative plane protection" - providing that the main character is not a MU, the temporary loss of levels is rarely that crucial - two rings of Gaxx give good saving throw bonuses anyhow. I usually protect the best cleric or MU with the amulet rather than the PC - as level drain removed unused spells, which is a pain. if you follow my money-making thief idea and have 600k in the bank, then buying all the restoration scrolls you find is no problem. I always try to get as many master thief potions as I can, to make sure my stats are around 200% on pick pockets for shoplifting - at 190+ you rarely get caught and with a few expensive items can rack up the 10k plus each cycle of sell-steal back. save every 100k to avoid re-starting the exercise. gloves of pick pocketing can be had in the copper coronet and the potions last long enough to pocket some cash, recharge all wands, do a bit of a quest and return before it has worn off.
[I actually used about 25/50 of the cloud-kill in one quest recently (Firkraag kept healing himself), but did emerge unscathed.]

anyhow - no need to choose - you can get the full MoD AND the quest XP.

I opted for the weapon. I think I still have the alloy ore. Sarles' reaction to the fake ore is worth more than the XP from any follow up quest. It was pretty funny...too bad you couldn't converse more during his tirade.

report back to Helm

if you have the alloy, then you can complete the quest still - just pop along to the temple and report that Sarles has gone off and will not be working for anybody. the top man will be pleased when he sees the tainted alloy.
you'll find it worthwhile.
