Fighter\Warlock, character tier questions

I want to be able to duel wield (light), Lifedrain, wear heavy armor and Nuke and I have a few questions.

1. Is it possible to start as a fighter (at character creation) and end as a Warlock (3rd tier)
i.e: Fighter\Mage\Marauder\Battlemage\Warlock

or will I have to go Mage\Fighter\Battlemage\Marauder\Warlock?

or in more general terms:
2. Does your 3rd tier class have to be inline with your inital character class at character creation or can I use my secondary classes, 3rd tier class options?

for example:

If I start as a fighter am I limited to: Lord, Deathlord, Hatamoto, Warlord 3rd tier clasess? or can I choose a 3rd tier based on my secondary class?

I started as a fighter and I just want to make sure I'm not wasting my time if I need to start as a mage to become a Warlock.

and no I'm not interrested in Samurai, Cabalist or Warwitch at this time, only fighter and warlock.

thanks

You can certainly do that. The order you get the first two main classes doesnt matter, other than the fact that you have to go on a quest to get the second calss activated.

I am working on a Fighter/Mage/BattleMage/Marauder/Warlock right now.

I started out as a Fighter and grabbed Mage as soon as I got to Fargrove.

I now have BattleMage, and will soon have Marauder. The required stats for Warlock are rather high, so it will be a bit longer fefore I reach that goal.

Hi dlowrey,

Thanks for the quick reply, you have put my fears to rest, I thought I might have to start again as a Mage, that would suck because I wouldn't get all the Armor & Weapon learning bonuses I'm lookin for.

So it seems we are making the same character build:
Fighter\Mage\Battlemage\Marauder\Warlock

So far how have you found this build?

The main reason i want to try this build is the combination of Duel Wield and Drainlife, it should make for a build with very little downtime. not to mention the learning bonuses for weapons, armor and arcane skills.

If you have any tips for making this build better let me know, their dosen't seem to be very many warlock posts on this forum, I will do the same as i go up levels, and post on this thread.

thanks

One reasons that you don't see too many posts on Battlemage/Warlocks is that Sorcerer/Wizards are more popular. One reason is that Wizards get Spellfire, which by all accounts is a better skill than drainlife. My experience with drainlife on my War Witch is that I didn't see it do much of anything for me. I only put 6 points in it for that reason.

Wizard builds also get identify and an extra nether magic learning bonus.

Battlemage/Warlocks are really versatile though. You'll be able to use powerful heavy weapons as well as light duel and get high level heavy armor and shields with the learning bonuses of these classes.

You mentioned "nuking" your enemies. You will surely do that with arcane magic. It's a great skill to use for a first character.

You haven't mentioned what race your character is. Hopefully its a human or elf, since those races can get to decent or high levels of intelligence 80 to 100+), which will help with building your character at higher levels.

This is a very viable and powerful build you have started. Don't worry about what you don't have, you do have a lot going for you.

Don't ignore some of those nice celestial spells though. Build this skill up a bit too.

Hi Frodo1,

Thanks for the feedback, I value your advice. You have provided my best advice so far by reading your posts.

In particular staying in the pre-sewers part of the game and building up a few levels before entering and skipping thieving skills putting the points into strength and intelligence and using bash! this has worked out so much better than what I was doing.

That's unfortunate, Warlocks seem like they will be fun to play. I just designed this build around my play style and likes:

I've loved Warlock's every since that cheesy 80's movie starring Julian Sands (movie quote) "I know your name!, I know the name that can undo all you have wrought!"

Drainlife = I hate casting healing spells and using or I mean depending on healing potions.

I hate downtime and running away and I like extended battles.

Duel Weapons to me just looks cool, and with this build, it should allow me to switch between heavy weapons and shields when I find cool stuff, I like the flexibility. I also like the high level armor part.

I will build up the magic side of this build with Arcane (nuke), but I will also take a closer look at celestial, I haven't yet. besides Julian Sands could cast spells. :D and this is my first character. (I'm going to try your elf\WarWitch build next :) )

Most posts that seem to have had success with Drainlife have put between 8 and 10 points. If possible I would like to put 10 or more. I have no idea if this is possible, I'm a noob.

I picked human, it more fit the character. I plan on putting alot of points into INT so that my skills cost less earlier (point efficiency), also learned from your posts.

I was only worried that I needed to be a Mage class at character creation, I didn't want to waste time getting a fighter to necessary level then being shut down, that would suck, but dlowrey and the character planer tool cleared that up for me.

Two questions for you Frodo1 (or anyone else):
1. How do you feel about the Athletics skill? do you ever buy it?
2 Can you pay to have things identified? or buy a scroll or something?

Thanks

1. My last time through the game I didn't put any points in athletics, and I was happy with the decision. Too often athletics causes me to tumble by mistake, and it disrupts my melee fighting.

2. Every shopkeeper can repair and identify objects. There isn't an identify scroll, or anything like that.

drain life - my last character (1.4) was a Warlock and with drainlife (8 pts) my guy would regain full health after a few ninjustiu hits on a high level beastie... I almost never took healing potions or spells... just threw a few spells... jumped in the mix with a lot of combo kungfu and I was surrounded by dead enemies and full of health! cool skill...

whoa.

I'm doing exactly the same character. That's all, I'm just fascinated to know there is someone out there who would think the same as I would. =)

1. good to hear I didn't want to waste any points in athletics, and I don't want anything to get in the way of my hackin and slashin :D

2. I just made it to Fargrove so I'll try id'ing some stuff so I'm not Butt naked anymore.

Great!, this works out perfectly I hate depending on healing potions and spells, they just get the the way of my Hackin and Slashin! Did I mention I like Hackin and Slashin!

Surely a true sign of the coming Apocalypse! :D Tell me you like like that cheezy 80's warlock movie also and we may be soul brothers! How is your character build coming along?

Character Progress\Strange Events
1. Just made it to Fargrove, level 6 almost level 7 ( yes I'm playing ultra slow :o )
2. All points so far put into STR(35) and INT(30)
3. Bash has so far worked on all chests in the sewers
4. One of my saved games got corrupted, my character was stuck on the porch of the two huts pre-sewers level, cost me to loose like 8k exp
5. For some reason my light weapons skill is increasing without me knowingly putting any points into it  char lev1 skill = 1, char lev2 skill = 1,
char lev3 skill = 2?!?, char lev4 skill = 3?!?, char lev5 skill = 3, char lev6 skill = 4?!?. The is there some type of minimum skill level\character level enforcement going on here???
6. One computer mouse destroyed due to excessive clicking (seriously)

Playing DLCE 1.5

Thanks
