Sounds like the game thought you were a specialist mage for a time, thus getting one additional spellslot on each level, before suddenly realising that you can't dual class into a kit in BG2. Pretty wierd bug. Do you have the normal amount of spells for a mage now or are you one spell short on each level?

Besides using an editor to correct that problem I have no idea. Try leveling up first though. Sometimes the game has a way of correcting itself with sich things.

Could it be that you used to have a Ring of Acuity, or Ring of Wizardry or something like that, and pick a fight with a Nishruu or similar??

If you lost such a Ring while wearing it, you also lost a number of spell slots.

When you createde a dual fighter/mage - the game thinks you've got at specialist mage (hence +1 spell per lvl.)

But the bug fixes this - so you're just a normal mage (hence -1 spell again)

It did with me, anyway :-)

The bug can't fix a bug :-)
