There is some strange thing going on with my system and I think it has to do something with my videocard. I have the 3dfx Voodoo Banshee (an oldie but Goody!) Occasionaly (not very often, thank Bhaal!) the games crashes during a quicksave or an area change and goes to a blue screen (you kno the one...) It happened to me with BG1 too, and I played this (waaaaaay) before I upgraded my comp. I 'm saying it has to be the banshee, cause this is the only part of my previous comp that survived the latest upgrade (I have a Celeron 700 for the past 6 months, with 256 MB RAM and it runs reeeealy smooth)
Tried changing the card settings, the resolutions, virtualy everything but nothing appears to work

I have one(there are still good) and the only problem I have is when I leave the game by quit/quit the screen goes black.(I minimixe the game and then use CRLT ALT DEL to end the game). try to install the lastest drives or your problem can be the OpenGL.

It happens to me in BGI too but not in GBII. why? mistery have you tried the BGII FAQ of Interplay, perhaps they can help.
