stuck--please help... (Shadow Ruins)

I have gotten too the place where you place the shadow stone on the alter but am unable to gain access to the shadow ruins. Whats wrong?
Did you actually place the shadow stone on the altar? And if you did, did you leave the area or load your game? Both things will cause the shadow gate to disappear.
