Yes, mainly light weapons. But I was fooling around editing a character and found out the main weapon could be the Demon Blade of Charrus (magical, fire) which looks to be about 7 or 8 feet long, and the secondary slot with the Sword of Flame. Quite a devistating combination indeed.

Light or medium duel wield refers to the offhand weapon only. For either skill you can wield a medium weapon in your main hand. So, light duel gives you medium/light, medium duel gives you medium/medium. Scepters can only be wielded in the main hand though and cannot be used off hand. I also understand that the greatswords, which are heavy weapons can be wielded in the main hand.
There were terrible glitches in this skill until the 1.4 patch and I wouldn't doubt that you could find a problem equiping a certain weapon combo, but I don't know of any right now.
Both skills are great and duel wield is the best way to go if you want to focus on melee. Hatamoto's get light wield and critical strike, which is very cool. Deathlord's get medium duel which is powerful. Ninja lords get light duel as do Samurai's. All are good choices depending on what path you want to follow.
Have fun.

Thanks for the help, i forgot to ask earlier, but how would i be able to block, with my off hand weapon?

One of the inconsistencies of the game is that you can equip a shield even if you are wielding a bow, heavy weapon, or duel wielding. So, just block away with the shield still equiped to your off-hand.

A more realistic approach would be to allow only small shields to be worn while dual wielding or using a two-handed weapon. A small shield or buckler could easily be worn on the forearm w/o getting in the way.

My character is a Hatamoto/Battlemage (so I can weild heavy weapons and Heavy armor) anyhoo I have light dual weild and I carry a Emerald Greatsword (Heavy Weapon 6-20 damage) in my main hand and a Kris Blade of Darkness (Light Weapon 6-11 damage) in my off hand and I do serious damage melee with Critical Strike and Inflict wounds - combine that with Cataclysm and I am pretty tough... so, there ARE heavy weapons you can dual weild in the main hand...

Actually, I think that would be way too much of an encumbrance for something that takes a great deal of dexterity in the first place. As other RPGs have done it, the shield really should take use the same slot as your secondary, and you choose one or the other. Not a game-breaker in any case though.

I have beaten the game once going the deathlord rout, and a great dual weild melee stratigy is to use to weapons that utilize ice strike, allowing you to freeze your opponents every time you hit them, and makes them unable to fight back.
