Probably the most stupid question of the day!

Early on in the game you get scrolls like 'protection from magic', etc. I've never used such a scroll but it seems it comes in handy fighting Kangaxx. Now the problem is, I don't know how to use these scrolls. When I got my first scroll (it was protection from fire or ice I believe) I tried reading it, but I couldn't use it, only read it and press 'done'.
What could be the problem?
