Hello all again. (After spending the better part of the past year at "ToB's Oasis" I have come to the conclusion that: Deserts are no fun!!)

I have a question and could not find it on FAQ et.al. I started another character, a Swashbuckler. How do I "backstab". The book says that I have no multiplier, so OK. But will I be able to anyway and get no bonus, and how would I do that?

I have images of Hide in Shadows/Invisibility potion and smacking a guy when he least expects it, but if the Swashbuckler can't then I'll just go on and continue.

A Swashbuckler has no backstab multiplier. So don't expect to Hide, go behind an enemy, attack and end up with 200 damage. All that happens is the enemy doesn't see you and you get a free shot at him before the battle starts. And you shouldn't always expect to hit either, it misses sometimes.

Yes, as Berethor said, and so did your manual, a Swashbuckler has no multiplier. That's exactly the point.

When you attack someone through Invisibility or "Hide in Shadows", the multiplier activates. So, because a Swashbuckler doesn't have a multiplier, or rather has the standard multiplier of one, he gets no extra damage.

A multiplier of one is kind of having your damage multiplied by one, and as such not increasing. Had you chosen an assissin who has a mutliplier of seven and say you were about to inflict 28 damage on your enemy's wizard, you would've done 28*7=196 damage.

I don't favor the Swashbycklet too much because of this. Losing the multiplier is bad in my opinnion, even if you do get an extra proficiency slot and Whirlwind.

I'm not sure, but I *think* that Swashbucklers can get the Assassination skill. I doubt it though.
