Do they really do damage to yourself? I haven't tried one yet. As for rat's meat, every edible ingredient or foodstuff has some positive or negative effect for a period of time on your character. Eating rat meat is great for a melee character in combat because it improves your fatigue. It has damaging properties also, but that's a bit of a spoiler. Eating anything also improves your alchemy skill. If it's a major skill, then the effect is pretty good at low levels. True, rat meat isn't very profitable, but in the long-run, selling all that "stuff" will net you a sizable profit.

if u would have read the manual u would have known that those poisons u dont ingest.....u put them on your weapons to poison the weapon...nice touch this go round....be careful when u make them though..if u have a positive effect and a negative effect in a potion...its not a poison its a potion and u ingest it....the green bottles go on the weapons...the pink ones u drink

Actually, those potions are pretty nice, the damage strength, damage fatigue, damag health, an any other combination of DOT's, those are nice it helps take down a big boss fast, and the boss doesnt really do much damage to you... thats what i think the potions are for.

I guess this is why the game guide really pushes strongly for melee characters to make alchemy a major skill. It sounds like using poisons gives more depth to the hack-n-slash type build without forcing that character type to use offensive magic spells.

It's not just good for melee types. You can use poisons on arrows, too. Hit a distant melee foe with a Burden-poisoned arrow, and you can fire off more regular arrows or spells at them while they can't move.
