No Weapon - Spoiler

I`ve just dual classed my kensai at level 9 to a mage. As a kensai, he`s qualified for dual weapon, long swords, katana and flail. I chose sling when he was upped to a mage. Now I can`t equip him with anything.
What have I done wrong? I have a saved game so would be grateful for some help.

If I remember right, you get you're weapon professions back if you reach level 10 (one level above the level of your first class) as mage. But at least a sling you should be able to use.

Readwulf is 100% correct. You lose all your previous class abilities (THACo, armor/weapon access, and proficience, among others) until you are one level higher than your previous class level. So, until you are level 10, you're going to be w/out the profs. Sorry! (My advice is to choose either Dagger or Staff- they're much more versatile than sling. Staff gives you a solid weapon w/reach, and dagger gives you a melee and ranged weapons)

Just a guess

Because the Kensai class is disabled when you dualed over to a Mage (until your dude becomes a 10th level Mage), you can only equip weapons usable by Wizards.

Since Kensai classes cannot use missile weapons, I'm guessing this is why your dude can't equip a sling. Maybe you'll have better luck with a staff or dagger, as mentioned previously?

Up that about sums it up, but don't worry - try getting the boomerang +2 dagger - it does loads of damage when used in melee plus it can be thrown. Until you get to level 10 your in the dark.

So I have to get to level 10, and then dual? At the moment (level 9) I can`t use anything. I didn`t realise dualing was such hassle!

No! Stop! Wait! That is wrong. This is how dualing works:

-You must be human and have the requiste stats for the classes involved. Furthermore, you can only dual within class combinations that the game allows.

-Start in whatever class you want- in your case, Kensai (an excellent choice).

-Go to whatever level you want. For a Kensai->Mage, as you mentioned, the ideal levels are 9, 12, 13, or 15. Only choose 15 if you have TOB or an XP remover installed. I personally like 9, because I am impatient. I would strongly recommend 9th if you do not have TOB or an XP cap remover installed.

-Whatever level you choose (in our case, we'll say 9), once you dual you essentially lose all abilities of the class you are giving up (in your case Kensai) until you reach the level at which you dualed +1. So, in the case of this example, that would be 9+1= 10. If you wait until 10th level, it will be 11th, etc.

FYI- dualing can be a pain in the short term, but in the long term it is how to make a tremendously powerful character. This is a very short explanation, but if you want the logic behind it, just search this forum. The recent thread on "Cheesiest Characters" talks about it some.

I think I`ve sorted it now. The trouble was I was half way through the unseeing eye quest, so no option to buy anything. The only weapon in my group that my character could use was the ordinary staff that aerie has.
I`m afraid I`m going to have to cheat and get myself a decent weapon via CLUA.
Thanks for the replies.

Bad idea, a good weapon is not something a mage needs - I try to dual when I have potloads of money to spend on scrolls so that I can level up fast, or when I complete a major quest so I can atleast gain a level or two to make my mage worthwhile. Although there are plenty of good weapons to give yourself - personal recommendation: Staff of Magi or Fire Tooth.
