Is Dungeon Lords CE for me?

I'm a D W Bradley fan, but got burnt with Wizards and Warriors when I bought it the day it was released and spent the next months trying to work through its unfinished state, and I swore that his next game I would wait and see before buying. Glad I did!
Now I am revisiting the choice to buy DL and would of course go for the Collector's Edition, and have a couple of questions to those experienced with the game. The CE comes out here in the UK in a couple of weeks time so I thought I would try the demo in the meantime.

I installed it and was aghast at the combat, and the flood of monsters despite putting the setting to less spawns. I simply ended up clicking like crazy and felt I had little control over what was happening and certainly no opportunity for any sort of strategy. Is the whole game like this or does it get better and allow for a more controlled and thoughtful combat strategy and tactics?

Is there any sort of usable manual with the game? For example I could see no way to put heal potions into a ready slot so as to be able to easily consume them during combat and had to go into the inventory screen to use them. Normally this wouldnt concern me but having seen the type of combat I feel I wouldnt be able to play without this facility.

Lastly, which of the previous D W Bradley games do you feel DL most closely resembles in playing?

Thank you for your time and opinion.

Easy solution, just play about ½ a n hour, controls are at hand. If not, u must be "brandiycapped" ... A good game afterall...
Allso u gain more "moves" at level 5 !
Is the whole game like this or does it get better and allow for a more controlled and thoughtful combat strategy and tactics?
Thoughtful? Strategy? Tactics? There is a lot of good stuff in the game - I personally like the combat and spells - but the enemies spawn every 30 - 90 seconds and charge at you with reckless abandon.

Yes - and what you do is just mouse over a spell or item in inventory and how a number from 1-8 and click on the item and it goes to the quick slot.

Playing? None. But in other ways it is most like W&W, if you get my meaning ;)

Thanks Mike.

Gotta admit, I am struggling with this game.
All I seem to do is press the LMB as fast as a I can, and run.
Seems to be no way to target anything other than to just click and click and hope you strike something.
Strikes me like some kiddies platform game more than an RPG.
A bombardment of monsters that you cant use an strategy to kill.
Where is the thinking element?
I cant believe this is the work of D W Bradley!

Wizardry 7 was a fabulous game, and even with the bugs Wizards and Warriors was also a good game, but this does not appear to be of the same ilk.

Ah well, back to Wizardry 8......

I've deleted the demo from my hard drive. Thank goodness I didn't pay any cash for this rubbish!

While fans of the game would tell you the demo is not a fair representation of the game, I say it is a good enough indicator of whether you will like it. The actual game - especially the CE *is* much better, and they reworked that beginning area significantly to make it less of a death trap, but the basics of the game - combat focus in particular - remain.
I cant believe this is the work of D W Bradley!
But the Wiz games were a team effort, whereas W&W and this are pretty much all Bradley.

Strategy?

Oh yes there is strategy. like for example I was doing the Marauder class quest, and I was attacked by swarms of monsters and the boss, I summoned 3 minotaurs, and then started to fight the boss in 1 on 1 combat. I had alot of fun doing that. and there is bows, shurikens, throwing knives, and they can come in different varietys like poison. A good buy in my opinion
