Video Problems At Beginning of Game

I recently bought Oblivion and everything loaded up fine until I started a new game and was brought to the character creation screen. I then realized that I should probably be seeing the character I was customizing, but instead the whole screen (other than the menu with name, race, etc.) was all white. I tried to start the game and ended up in the jail cell however everything was still white and I could barely see anything except for a few outlines of the jugs, bones, etc. I don't think the brightness/contrast is the issue because the opening cinematic looked fine and worked smoothly. Also, whenever I try to change video options and return to the game, it shuts down and I get the send/don't send Windows error message. I'm pretty sure the probem is something with the video card, but I am a pretty big newbie when it comes to computer tech. Does anyone have any suggestions about a solution? Also, what is a good video card to get for this game that isn't too expensive?

Could you post your card specs, etc. That will help others with tech saavy to get straight at your problem. I am not that person unfortunately.

Hmm, not sure how to fix the problem, but i can answer the question about video cards.

Depending on how much you have, a good decent card would run Oblivion just fine for say....120-150 bucks. Decent card, not minimum mind you.

I'm guessing you have an unsupported video card. I'm further guessing that you have a GeForce Ti4000 series?

I would advise a new card, but it is playable (albeit with some glitches such as purple water) with heavy tweaking.

Siberys posted a forum link to these tweaks; there is a newer, more simplified tweak, out now here.

Good luck!

I'm currently using an ATI Radeon 9200... which I'm guessing doesn't meet the requirements for Oblivion. However, I did use the link that Denethorn provided to remove the shaders and I can now play the game using my current video card. Since the graphics and speed of the game aren't near where they could be with a more powerful card, this "Oldblivion" is probably just going to be makeshift until I purchase a new one. Anyways, thanks for the help!
