If you know anything about hex editing, the following gets you across the acid with plenty of time to walk through the shadow gate into the chess room.

When you enter the acid room, stay on the pressure plate and quickly save. Now quit the game. Open the save with a hex editor and scroll to the bottom of the file. There's three main groups of data among all the 00000000's.

You want to edit the third group, on the side with the o's and other numbers and letters, from the bottom of the file. The group of data will look very similar to this;
F3A0A14800000242F9559247000000005880EE49 Replace it by typing in the following;

2B99A148000002424497D247000000007480EE49

If that's too technical for you, download Steve2d's editor 1.53x. Make sure you have microsoft netframework 1.1 installed (free download) before using the editor. Open the save with you standing on the acid room pressure plate. At the bottom right, type in these values for the coordinates;

for x, type in 1218550059

for y, type in 1107427328

for z, type in 1204983620

for direction, type in 1240367220

save your work. start game and load the edited save. You have plenty of time to walk through into the chess room.

Personally, I don't have to use such cheap methods. The only reason I shared the information was because so many gamers simply could not get past the acid room. This posting was for information only, it was not meant to give someone an escuse to start a flame thread. I could care less whether anyone finds the information useful or not. "Use it, or lose it "

doesn't work for me

I am having a very fustrating time in the acid room. I have tried it so many
times I see those platforms in my sleep. I tried Steve 2d editor but cannot save
my game after I have changed the coordinates. I have framework 1.1 and downloaded the editor. I can get it to come up and when I load my saved game all the correct figures are there, my stats, money etc,
so I change the coordinates and try to save. it tells me that it is backing up
my saved game and then tells me that my saved game cannot be used? because it is being used elsewhere. I also get all kind of messages that say
I can continue or quit. My game gets into my saved file with a bak instead of
a sav. Can you tell me what is wrong. I am playing CE and can go no further.
My coordination simply will not let me get past the second platform so I need
to use the editor or have someone jump for me....Please help
