In one of the menus it says, "Shops invested in" or something like that. Does that mean you are able to buy a shop and recieve revenue from it? Or does it have something to do with the main quest?

By mastering mercantile skill one should thus be able to invest in shops and probably receive revenues with a either weekly or monthly interval. Know however that mastering the mercantile skill is not the easiest one to highten oneself in. You can by the way only invest in shops not purchase them.
Or so i believe. I have not had the chance to apply these skills since i have yet to reach the level of master in mercantile skill.

From what I remember from the guide what it means is that for example you invest in a shop 1000 gold, and this merchant had 1000 gold, after the investment he now has 2000 gold for selling and buying ie you can sell your items for higher prices with him which is good considering that the highest I've come up with so far is 1200. The only issue is that I seem to remember being a cap on this, but I am not sure, ie the amount you can invest.

That is correct. Atleast the way I have heard it aswell.
Invest a certain amount of money in a store and that store will now have that certain amount of money extra, forever.

I don't know either about any cap, since I never got that high in that skill.
