edwin gets an extra 3 spells / spell level.

and has both hands free for acuity / wizardry.

to top it off he only misses out on divination spells (the best of which can also be cast by clerics, druids & inquisitors)

that being said i'd take imoen or nalia over him any day.

Some people love him or hate him. I would never venture around with him not being in my party. He is buy far one of the better Mage out there. Look at all those spells he can cast. I even think he is a little to powerful for the game. But he is there so I will use him. But I have not tried some of the other magic users out there. Maybe some are just as good. But for the time being I will have him around. His strenght does suck but there is spells out there that can fix that. Besides he never is in the front line. He stays back and cuases alot more trouble then a sword ever will. ;)

Personally, I like Imoen better than Edwin.
The reasons being: a) Edwin is and I have a strong distate for characters b) Imoen has thief skills and can weild the Gesen bow c) I particularily don't like sniveling braggarts who pride themselves as know-it-alls.

Yeah, I'd say he is so great because of the extra spells per level. I mean 3 extra spells per level means Edwin is basically a mage and a half!

I have to agree that Edwin is one bad mo-fo! How does he get all those extra spells anyways? I noticed he has an amulet that he won't let you take off him, does it have something to do with that??? Now that I gave him the Ring of Wizardry and the other mage ring, Imoen isn't half the mage he is. She is still good with the timestop, but other than that Edwin is a monster.

In a phrase, three extra spells per level. He's always in my evil/neutral parties, although I prefer first Jan, then Imoen in my good/neutral parties.

i haven't played with em yet as i've never played a neutral/evil party. but i just started such a game....which really stinks cuz i hate seeing minsc and jaheira go. i'm really lookin forward to playin with some new characters, including edwin...there's a lotta interactions i've never seen.

For me its not the spells or stats... its the stuff he says. He is one of the funniest guys in BG1 and BG2.
LOL!, (!!!SPOILER!!!) Like when he is confronted the 2. time by his order. Just read the stuff is says while trying to convince him that he is not edwin but a woman.. thats just priceless!!! and in BG1, he has the greatest comment of them all... "Elminster this, Elminster that.. give me 2000 years. A pipe and a pointy hat and Ill kick his arse"(May not be 100% correct).

Besides, he is a kick butt mage.. sure he cant do much else then cast magic. But when he does it... he is a class above the rest of them. Only problem is that it takes forever for him to get above 60hp (Making him a prime target for instant kills).
I actually raised his Int score to 19 in BG1, wich makes him even better.. (You need to do abit of shadowkeeping to transport that to BG2.. but its worth it.)

me<--- BIG Edwin fan!!

acually he isnt that good per say but he is a mage whitch it self is powerful haing your main character a mage is the best but most people hate that insurcity of being able to die in 2 hits so they usually go main character a class with more life/ability to use good armor so edwin is just itself a mage not a good mage just a mage

Edwin is a better pure arcane spellcaster than anything else legit.

I was baffled by his end story.

The great Edwin like that ?

Dissappointing.

Anyways... he gets more spells than anybody including sorcerers, which makes him very powerful.

@TTwo, remember that Edwin's had a checkered career in the past, too. His Achilles' heel is his overweaning pride, and corresponding under-estimation of others. Of course, he supplements this by making his opinions known to all, which doesn't help. ;)

No matter how powerful you are, your power only derives from the permission others give you to possess it. Even a medieval Japanese lord knew that he could be brought low by badly treating a single samurai without reason. Edwin's probably got enough enemies, on the other hand, to start a fan club of their own. :)

Well, he does get two more spells of every level than a player-made Conjurer would... Use one of those two for Mirror Image, Vampiric Touch, Stoneskin, Protection from Magical Weapons and the like, and he's pretty tough to put down.
