there are two ways to use traps.
a) cheesy way, while a tough opponent is still blue set traps all around them. this method is vocally despised by the baulders gate playing universe, yet everyone tried it at least once.
b) rpg style, narrow spaces are your best friend, doorways even better. set traps in a area a hostile will have to cross and lure them into the trap.
both will be very effective, also remeber if one trap works great, even more is better, go overkill.
i prefer the damage traps to the "special traps", but check 'em out and see what works best for you.

To use traps effectivly you should scout ahead so you know what group of monsters you are facing. With multiple powerfull monsters, use the special traps, since it disables a couple of monsters. (it is better to fight 2 or 3 powerfull monsters, than it s to fight 5-6 powerfull, somewhat damaged monsters) Bear in mind that a monster does damage, even if it is near death.
On the other hand, use damaging traps if there are only 1-2 monsters OR when facing lots of low level monsters.
Good luck.
PS. If you get to have the special ability traps, there are some other strats.

The high level Thief traps make the Bounty Hunter kinda obsolete...

I've solo'ed with a illusionist/thief, and I have to say that traps are one of the best tools available to you. Go invisible (or stealth), scout out your enemies and the territory, and then make plans for the fight. Depending on the size of the monster, it could take only one trap or multiple traps to take it out. If there are a lot of monsters which only take one trap each to kill, make sure you space your traps out so that they don't all release on the first monster you lure out. Also, you can often summon monsters or have your party waiting to pick off the bad guys that make it through all of your traps. Often, when I solo'ed, half the battle was already won based on my trap placement.
And one more thing, having the boots of speed on your thief helps, as you can run away much more effectively (leaving the monsters to follow you at a distance).
