If you were to play one character, starting from level 1 in Candlekeep all the way through the game, and were going for sheer power, what would you play?

You can play with a party if you want/

Fighter mage thief, or sorcerer, or fighter mage.

@Da Venom, to play the game from Candlekeep to Amelissan you may use Tutu, and I'm using it cause it rules too much :)
Therefore it's a very different topic. Some classes are much less powerful in BG1, and that could definitely be a deciding factor.

That all being said, I would probably choose a Stalker. I realize they're not the most popular kit but you shouldn't misunderestimate them.
They can sneak, fight and cast both priest and mage spells (not too much though, that would be really unbalancing). And they're singelclass so they'll level up fast. Stalkers are probably the most versatile kit in the game.

Or maybe a Blade.

Fighter/Mage. Maybe kensai->mage since it's theoratically stronger, but annoying to level up. And fighter/mage easily takes you all the way.

Something I've never understood. IMHO, the Fighter HLA pool is one of the best, and with nerfed Grandmastery especially, a F/M is far superior to a K>M.

eh a kensai has the same pool as the fighter so wtf:S?

besides a kensai is an specialized fighter

specialize>normal xD

Please learn to type man. Your posts are very difficult and annoying to read.

Do you know how dual classing works?

A K>M only gets Fighter HLAs if you go to 3,000,000 XP in that class, which is a really long way. It's even longer considering you won't get that THAC0 or AC and damage bonuses back unti your mage level passes the Kensai level you decide to leave off at.

hmm, I thought a kensai or fighter didn't matter qua experience and such. Because botch use the same experience table so if u dual class it would be the same, so anyone from the fighter pool dualing to the mage uses the same experience table isn't it?

nope - all fighter classes use the fighter xp table, and all mages use the mage xp table.

At 8 million xp, a fighter reaches level 40 and a mage only level 34 (could be off, but it's irrelevant to the main point). A drastic example of this is a druid dualled to fighter. The drui would reach level 12 with only a mere 300K xp, but would need 1.5 million xp (or thereabouts) to reach level 13 as a fighter. Once they do, they regain the druid skills and continue to level against the fighter table.

so it wouldn't matter if you had a kensai>mage or fighter>mage since it's the same fighter xp table

that was my point ;)

I always play through the games solo. Perhaps im missing out, but whenever i used a party it ended up as one guy who runs ahead killing everything then the others follow.
Kensai to mage or Fighter to druid works well. You can take the mage up to its maximum level even after giving some experience to the kensai, and since druids use a lot of experience to level up towards the end, sacrificing a couple of levels for the advantage of a fighter is worthwhile. Never liked thieves myself, dont know why.

If youre exploiting glitches a straight kensai is probably the most powerful character going. Its possible to fairly easily put your stats up to 25 each in the first game, then gain 127%(i think) resistance to magic/fire/cold/electricity in SOA. Most importantly, in SOA you can get your base armour class to -26, removing the main problem of the kensai. Without the exploiting, a kensai tends to be very difficult to finish the game with. Pretty certain ive never managed it.

Oh yeah, and hello. I think this is my first post here

But the debate is between a Kensai > Mage vs. a Fighter/Mage, not a K>M vs. a F>M.

Hi! :)
Yeah, sure. Im new here so not sure if theres somewhere i cant find for spoilers/cheats etc. Ill pm it to you, since i dont know if i can post it publicly or not.

edit: pm sent. Im used to people turning up on elderscrolls forum boasting about what they've found, generally something very obvious, and it annoys me. So im making an effort not to do the same here. I expect its well known, but if not hopefully the pm makes it clear :)
