This is a ***SPOILER***, but you asked for it...

Yoshimo dies, and even though you can redeem his soul, you can't bring him back. Not even for ToB.

If you don't mind bending a few rules, there are ways to prevent his death. If you don't mind a few spoilers and really want to keep Yoshimo, I'll tell you how to do. Also, you could use the search-engine yourself in order to find it out.

Well, that's the problem. Except for Jan and Yoshimo, there are no really good thieves unless you create one yourself. You only got Nalia and Imoen left. They will be able Find Traps and Open Locks for you (barely) but need all thief skill enhancing items you can find. Nalia has least thief skills of the two and, to make matters worse, she has her Family Ring (non removable) on her right hand. Imoen on the other hand you'll get pretty late in the game which has it drawbacks, too. Should you compare the two, you could say that Imoen is the better thief while Nalia is the better mage (the difference depending on how fast you can get to Imoen). And should you want to backstab for major damage, Valygar is your only choise. Should you like to lay traps, you'll have to wait for the high level abilities in ToB (where even a bard can lay special traps even though no points spent in that skill). Me, I finish up with Jan *all* the time. But then I like him so it's no big deal. Should I instead go for one of the cuties, I'd make sure to also get Valygar (back stabbing) and Haer'Dalis (pick pockets and later lay traps) in my party.

The game does have a shortage of good thief NPCs. Of the three you can keep throughout the game -- Nalia, Imoen, and Jan -- only Jan advances in levels as a thief. I've never dragged him along through an entire game, so I don't know how powerful he'll get, but I suspect that the only way to get a really good thief is to have a thief PC.

Of the dual class thieves, Nalia is only a level 5, so her skills don't quite cut it. There are two rings that improve the IMO most important thief skills, trap detection and lock picking, and with those, she _might_ be OK (although it is a hassle to keep switching them back and forth -- she's only got one free ring slot). Alternatively, you could keep a huge stock of Potions of Master Thievery.

Imoen is level 7, and actually good enough to finish both SoA and ToB.

Jan can become a very powerfull thief, his main drawback is the low HP.

I used Jan for set/remove traps - open locks and his best feature of all - detect illusion.
That thief skill is incredible good - if an enemy uses shadow door, mirror image, project image or any illusion where he dissaperes - Jan can within one round detect and dispell that illusion :)

Well, that's really obvious now that you say it... Thanks, I had never thought of that myself.

On top of that, Jan's special bolts are a surprisingly good aid in battle. He even paralyzed a demon, once, when I needed to retrieve its heart during the Planar Sphere quest. Jan's not a straightforward character to use like so many--it takes strategy to see where his thief and mage skills play into one another.

Jan is an excellent thief. Since he's multi instead of dual (like Imoen and Nalia), you can give him points in thief skills when he levels. Jan was my only trap laying character all the way through ToB and he did just fine.

Summon a Nirushu or Hakesaar and sic it on Nalia. It will eat the D'arnise ring. I have no idea why, but it does (you might want to remove all of the other magic items from her though so). I can't even remember what it does (armor class and reisistances right?). I lost it when I first entered the guarded compound to get Celestial Fury. Since then I've had her equiped with the Ring of Acuity and the Ring of Wizardry. If anything she probably has too many spells now.

The only way to keep Yoshimo after Spellhold is to ditch Yoshimo in the Copper Coronet right by the door, so when you get back quickly click on him and get him back into the party before he is killed.

That's a bug, and Baldurdash has the fix.

But why would you want to get rid of her ring anyway? That thing is great. If I found it on an enemy, I'd give it to my pro to wear alongside the Ring of Gaxx. ;)
