Lore Accurate?

I'm not certain if this thread belongs here or in RPG Discussion, but since I'm talking about Morrowind, in this case, I decided to place it here.

Chu mentioned in my custom race thread that he would rather stay away from any mod that is not lore-specific. This reminded me of something I have often wondered about...

Do you think it is necessary to remain within the game's "established" lore when creating/using mods?

Personally, as long as a mod isn't *too* weird or at odds with the game, I don't really think it matters. I mean, this *is* fantasy after all. The game world was created by Bethesda, so it is not as though we are talking about real life history here. Thus, why shouldn't modders stretch the 'boundaries' that have been manufactured by the game's producers? It's all fantasy, regardless..... ;)

Thoughts?

I will never download a mod that isn't lore specific. It just drives me insane. With race mods and such, it's the only way to go. But with house and quest mods, it's just plain unacceptable.

I guess I have quite a lot of mods installed that are contrary to lore: new clothing, weapons, armor, items, quests... I have a mod that adds small, brightly coloured fairies to the leveled lists :D and some time ago I used "Forested Morrowind" which covers large parts of the island including the Ashlands with trees; I only removed it because it lowered my fps too much :(

The Morrowind lore is certainly interesting, but the main reasons I enjoy Morrowind so much is the amazing possibility for the player to make it *their* game. If that means adding lorebreaking mods, or stay true to the lore is not really important as long as you enjoy the game, in my opinion.

DW, your position is pretty much my own. Lore doesn't have to figure into every mod, but in areas that touch on lore (magic, gods, demonolgy, religion, history, etc), the mod should conform to the game. Otherwise it breaks the illusion of a reality which has been so carefully built up through the environment.

Absolutely.

For me the lore element of the game is very much a background feature, what creates the "illusion of reality" is often the features added by the mods themselves whether lore accurate or not, as elements of the original game are quite sterile.

That is not to say that I will download anymod, I do try and retain a general "fantasy" ambience, alothugh I'm willing to make exceptions for quality mods (such as the rolercoaster element of Mournhold expanded).

Ultimately I really couldn't imagine limiting my gaming experience just because a mod wasn't lore accurate.

I agree with Raven.

Plus why would Bethesda include the construction set if they didn't want the gamer to build upon the foundation they have set.

It only makes sense to use the tools they gave you to make the game each players own individual fantasy world.

Just have fun with it :)

Same here. I think me and chu are like this cause in our mods (tamriel rebuilt) we have to be lore specific. This might just be my excuse. Not so sure about chu.

Hmm...

So long as a mod isn't completely against lore... Like it suddenly moves to include stormtroopers and Boba Fett... its all good...

That said, some of the best mods have been closely in keeping with the original game...

One of my most hated mods are ones where you can arrive at seyda neen, go to some town and inhabit an empty mansion that has tonnes of gold and powerful items. This would destroys the lore of any game.
