Infinite Time? **Spoilers**

Well, just got done with the bruma gate and all with Captain Burd, now I've got to go find an army to help out Bruma.
My question is, since the game is far more advanced having a lot more AI and all, do I have infinite time, meaning, if I don't immediately go to the other cities to get an army, will the gate open and I screw everything up?
Right now, I'm wanting to take a break from the main quests, the oblivion gates are getting tedious with this virus on my PC that basically tabs out my game and then when I go back in, disables the game without letting me save, how wonderful.
So, anyways, if I say go join the mages guild and do a few things there, would Bruma die or would the quest come to an immediate halt like most other games that allow you to do what you want?
