I am having trouble beating the Yaun-Ti mage in Ch.2, the DeArnise Hold. Whenever I fight him he does these terribly powerful chaos things on my characters, and I don't know how to reverse them. The next strategy I plan to try is sending some summoned creatures into the room as bait, then bringing in my mage and casting fireball, followed by a lightning bolt. Please give me your strategy tips. Thanks,
Horatio

Well, I dont really know how to backstab, is it really useful? Is it even possible for the Mage to block the damage from the lightning bolt and fireball? If not then would it be better to memorize a bunch of lightning bolts and fireballs? Please give me your guys strats. Thanks,
Horatio

to backstab have your mage havbe a dagger or short sword now hide in shadows outside of the room go in the room while still in shadows go behind the mage and attack thats a backstab
he reflects spelldamage back to the source though those spells are useful to get the yuan-ti

Do you have the druid ability to summon fire elementals? :)

Summon the best monsters you can, then cast haste on them. That'll take down most minor foes.

or...

Cast the level 5 cleric spell Chaotic Commands on your best fighters. This protects them from charm/confusion spells like Dire Charm, Domination, Confusion, and that nasty Chaos spell. It also protects them from psionic blast, which is helpful when fighting illithid later on. Send them and only them into the room and kick some Yuan-ti ass! Haste them first for best results :D

Oh, and cast protection from fire on those fighters if the yuan-ti mage has a fire-shield up. Otherwise they'll get deep fried.

Now I didn't have the summon fire elemental ability, to my knowledge, but I just beat the Yaun-Ti handily. What I did was I did animal summoning II and got 2 cave bears, then I opened the door to the library that the Yaun-Ti Mage is in. As I was about to bring the bears in, an ice troll came out to the doorway to fight me. All I had to do was take out each troll by simply waiting at the door, away from the mage's dangers. The trolls proved very easy since half my party didnt have chaos inflicted on them, and I moved into the room with an almost entirely fresh party. I first cast dispel magic on the Yaun-Ti, then a fireball. I then just attacked with my fighters (I have a halfling-fighter, Korgan, and Minsc) and also, fired a sling missles from jaheira, and my meat and potatoes magic missles from my two mages. I quickly whooped the Yaun-Ti mage, in fact, I moved on without resting or healing and killed Glacias - whooped him so bad he started to run away, my party suffered almost no damage. Thanks for the help anyways all,
Horatio

Animal Summoning is what I used, too, at that point. Keep the mage occupied, while you deal with his troll associate. Once the troll is gone, pelt the mage with missiles, and dispel his protections. Just don't let him have a second to focus on your team.

Having the intelligent sword you can get under the Copper Coronet is really handy for dealing with enemies that cast "Confusion" type spells. Works nicely with Minsc.

Actually my main fighter is using Lilarcor at the moment, he is a Half-Orc and he has Master level in two handed swords. My minsc character is using a +1 or +2 two handed sword as well.
