thanks largely to the convergence of an internet connection and a mediocre computer, my online gaming is a bit text-based at the moment. and to that end I'm looking for a good (and preferably free) client that won't send me into an incoherent rage when I attempt to, well, actually do anything that involves keyboard manipulation. any ideas?

I'd suggest using the Search function at the
MUD Connector. It's a pretty sophisticated tool for narrowing the field of so many hundred MUDs down. Plus many MUDs have their own description of what they're like on MC, and links to websites.
Other than that, I can only suggest DragonRealms. I've no idea how it is these days, but I used to work on the staff, and it has tons of well-integrated commands, lots of interesting places to explore, a bunch of well-developed professions, and more items than you can shake a booty at.

I would suggest AL Client (Ashavar Legacy Client). It has features like automapping, and many other. And it's free. It is, though, meaned to use with Ashavar Legacy mud, which sadly has been closed down, but the client should still be available.

I used Zmud in my mudding days. There used to be a free 16-bit version, though if it's still available for download I've no idea
Later on Zugg (creater of Zmud) made a 32-bit version as well but that one was not free.
Anyway, it's a great client for Windows in my opinion. Nice features like triggers, macros, aliases, mapping and the ability to redfine the colour scheme.
