AI: Intelligence or Incompetance?

I recently started a new game, and decided to take advantage of the auto-buff script that comes with Soloufien. However, in order to use it, you have to turn on party AI, and I started thinking: how good is the party AI? I've always turned it off, prefering to direct my characters myself, but every now and then it gets annoying when they stand still and get pummeled, so I got to wondering. Is it worth turning the AI on? Or do they just end up rushing into enemies, wasting spells, and drinking all the potions?

You can set up the scripts for the party AI, but in general they will just attack if they are attacked or if they see an enemy. They have never cast spells or used potions when party AI is on (at least for me) and you can easily stop them from running into battle just by clicking on them and moving them elsewhere.

I sometimes set very basic scripts like "aggressive fighter" or "passive fighter" but never use any of the caster options. The AI in particular is much too zealious in it's use of spells and could easily waste the best spells on weak enemies.

Another problem is casting in public when fighting enemies, before getting a liscence.
