anyone know where i can find a great sould gem
or what the largest type of sould gem is
and do human souls fit in these types of gems?

Join the mages guild and grab some, pretty much all over the place there.

they don't have any great ones
or if they did i stole them all and sold them or what not

Dunno what to say then, that's the best place to get some.

Get high in level and explore ayleid tombs that have conjurers in them is always optional.

is there a place where i can buy them?

in the arcane university area and another mage guild hall ( i forget which) i just pick the display cases and tak em from there its not even reported as theft, well not when i did it anyway lol.

I think you can buy grand soul gems in the market district of the imperial city, but to capture a human soul I think (never done it myself) you need a black soul gem. You'll find the altar to make one during the Mages Guild Quests.

With the simple use of the 'Search' feature above you could have your answer, but below is a list of the Soul Gems and their capabilities.

For Capturing Monsters.

Petty - 150
Lesser - 300
Common - 800
Greater - 1200
Grand - 1600
Azura's Star - 1600 (Reusable)

The only one capable of capturing humanoids is the Black Soul Gem, which you can only acquire using a Dark Altar, which you find during the Dark Fissure quest for the Mage's Guild, and you create those gems from Empty Grand Soul Gems.

how do i use the dark altar?
it just says open altar

put the soul gem in, wait till night but before midnight and once a week a light will shine down on the altar. When it does, cast soul trap on the altar and instant black soul gem

And if memory serves, you don't need a grand soul gem. I think I made my first one from an empty common soul gem.

I've found that chests in the Ayleid ruins often have soul gems of various sizes - sometimes they even have soul in them already. The Mystic Emporium in the Imperial City sells them, as well as a few other merchants (the ones that sell alchemy components). I highly recommend gettings Azura's Star as well, a re-useable soul gem.

I have found them in fleshy pods, and the punished while closing oblivion gates.
I dont know if they sell you stuff diffenerently as you level up, I am only level 15 but I buy em all over the place, I am completely dependent on my enchanted items (especially my shock staff from the arcane university) so I typically buy any and all with a soul level of petty or better, but anyone that sells soul'd ones sells unsoul'd ones. Bruma mages guild house has em.
