Irenicus Spell List **SPOILERS**

Did a search and didn't see this topic so I thought I would bring it up. After facing Irenicus at the tree in the Suldanessar forest I seemed to recall a couple of odd things about spells he used (or tried to use). I reloaded and since my PC had the Cloak of Mirroring, the ring of Gaxx, and Carsomyr (giving him darn near total invulnerablility to magic) I replayed the fight and let Irenicus exhaust all his spells on me just to see what his spell list was. I found out some interesting things (and weaknesses IMHO) when it was over.
**Spoiler**
First, he never once tried to physically attack me, it was always magic.
Second, "ALMOST" every attack spell was single target type. The major exceptions were Abi-Dalhzam (sp) Horrid Wilting and (IIRC) Cone of Cold.
Third, he starts with the highest level spell left in his inventory and works down by spell level until that level is exhausted.
Fourth, he "apparently" has an unlimited supply (I finally stopped counting at 50) of magic missles that he can cast at will (as a natural ability not a spell). He uses these (and only these) once everything else is exhausted.
I counted the number of spells of each level and I think it indicated he was about a 28 to 30th level mage. If anyone is interested I will list the exact spells I experienced.

One must notice that in tactics this will change, but yes, it matches my experience. Killing him with a solo bard was hard in the first time cause I relied too much on melee combat still, and I had to use some minor cheese to slay him, and his magic missiles were just annoying me at the end.

Very interested, please.
Anyone ever noticed how similar Jon Irenicus looks to David Warner, the actor who provided Irenicus' voice, when he was in that movie Time Bandits?
Whenever Titanic or The Omen is on, I tell my wife "Baby, I smoked that dude in Hell." She rolls her eyes, as if unimpressed. (?)
Thanks, Bioware and Mr. Warner. One of my favorite villains ever.

Pretty sure he got off a few other area effects on me - can't remember if it was Cloudkill or Stinking Cloud, but I do remember him casting it. Think it was Stinking Cloud.
Anyway, if you're into your cheese, see my Mordenkainen's Sword trick in my 'SoA wisdom' (hah!) thread. Works a treat on Irenicus. I don't think any of my party actually laid a finger on him (I tried to get Keldorn in for the final blow but wasn't quick enough). I think I only used two swords and some other cheap summon (an ogre or summat like that, pretty sure it was from Monster Summoning I, whatever it was), which was surprisingly (and somewhat annoyingly with hindsight) easy.
The battle in Hell was a Hell of a lot harder though (apologies for the pun) because I just laid into him in melee while my MSs kept the summoned baddies at bay. That was not an easy one. Having read the strategy guides afterwards, I can see how I could have made it a lot easier though. I reckon the secret to beating him is a) patience and b) keeping out of his way.

His fatal flaw did seem to be a lack of melee. My tactics mostly were allowing him to exhaust his spells then just laying into him.
He's still the biggest badass in Faerun though

Irenicus' List **SPOILERS**
Sorry to be so long to reply CFM,
Been having trouble getting GB to load last few days. Have tried 3 times to post this and keep getting "Database Error". Anyway, my notes are below as to what I experienced. I did this a while back and have discovered I should have made more comments in the margin to prompt my memory as to what happened in that encounter. So I "might" have an error or two when it comes to his defensive spells that automatically get cast via contingency, spell trigger, etc. But the list of spells he casts during combat is pretty solid.
AxeSlash, I don't recall a Cloudkill or Stinking Cloud, IIRC he cast spells only in his immediate vicinity or targeted an individual (like with a Maze) and I don't believe he dumped either of those two on top of himself. I'll take better notes when my next party goes through.
**SPOILERS**
(Cast By Chain Contingency)
Absolute Immunity
Spell Shield
Spell Trap
Protection from Energy
(Cast By Spell Trigger *side note*: it seemed like he had TWO spell triggers which I seem to recall is is not allowed but none the less did seem to happen and especially given the number spells I recorded) These may be out of order.
Monster Summoning 3
Fire Shield Red
Fire Shield Blue
Globe of Invulnerability
Mislead X2 (another reason I think he had 2 triggers)
Shield
(Cast By Contingency)
Protection From Magic Weapons
Spell Turning
Mislead
(Spells Cast During Combat. Except for spells within the timestop he basically used them from highest level down. The ones cast within Time Stop were "slightly" lower like Abi Dalzim and followed by Power Word Kill)
Time Stop X2
Absolute Immunity (a 2nd one that was used after the one cast in CG expired)
Power Word Kill X2
Abi Dalzim Horrid Wilting
Maze X3
Sunfire
Cone of Cold X6
Flame Arrow X7
Melf's Acid Arrow X7
Unlimited (it seemed) Magic Missles that could be fired without casting.

Well...
You do not actually have to watch him cast those spells, simply download infinity explorer, find him there and youre all set
All the spells plus the amnout is there written, as well as his level (29 mage), his HP, his armor class, resistance and all his stats.

Hmm. I don't recognise all of those spells there Philos. I beat him some time ago with my soloing fighter/mage. But then he didn't cast some of those spells, for example, never monster summonig III,But maybe i was to quick to kill him, didn't exhaust his spellist like you.
But I noticed that some of his spells worked different from the ones you get, although they were named like the ordenary ones, though it was some time since now and I don't really remember what it was. But i think it was someting funny about his fireshield red/blue. And his got this strange spell consigency "tatoo of power" or somting like that.
But when I faced him he fell after just a spell consingency, a timestop, a spell trigger and some hack n' slashing.

Gotta Take Better Notes Next Time
My second party is about to finish the Underdark and I'll definitely take more (and better) notes this time. I "think" the monster summoning was part of a spell trigger IIRC, but it was a while ago. If so you may have finished him before that trigger got "tripped".
Hmm, the monsters arrive in clouds of smoke, I wonder if that is what you might be remembering AxeSlash?!
Now that you mention it Emnelion, I do seem to recall something odd about the way some spells were named one thing but did something different. Dang, I wish had taken better notes!
Haven't used I.E. neOgen, would be easier for sure, but as JonIrenicus (the GB member that is) said not as fun.
I have to admit I got a good deal of satisfaction from watching Irenicus futilely throw spell after spell at me to no effect.
