Help Dual-classing in BG2

Hello Gurus,
I've picked up BG2 again this summer & thought I'd try dualling. I'm a level 9 Kensai & would like to dual to a thief but the option is not "highlighted"/availuable. Do I have to wait until a certain level or do I need something other than the Bioware Patches?
Thank yall for any help you've time to offer!

Kensai Lvl9, Str13,Dex17,Con17,Int13,Wis18,Chr13 in case needed...

You can only dual class if the primary attributes of each class are sufficient. 15 for the former class and 17 for the new class. Or maybe the other way around. So for a kensai -> thief you would need strength 15 and dexterity 17.

You have the wrong stats for dual classing over to a thief, like stated above. Sometimes you have to be wary of alignments too (but not in this case)
