Whats the best familar a mage can get? When i was at the copper cornet my mage started fighting some dego in the pit. and when i won my rabbit stayed there. i could not leav the CC and that F***** bunny dosen't respond to my "selfdestruct" order. I hate bunnys and i swear i will kill all bunnys i encounter. ( from this day on i will be Chaotic Neutral)

speaking of sacrificing bunnies...they work quite well against the demon knights in the underdark...just unleash them, send your summoned animal to bring the knights otu and walk otu of the room...the knights use up all their spells on the bunnies

Surprised this hasn't already degenerated into a brawl!
In reality the only real use a familar has is the HP bonus. So on this basis the only bad familiar is the IMP (LE) 18 H.P. instead of 24 H.P.. The ferret(LN) is the only familiar which can successfully pick pockets (75%) so if you want to expand your cabability via a familiar I think this is the only real addition. - Curdis

Ladies and gentleman, this night main event.
On the left corner with white shorts, the campion....BUNNY, the rabbit.
On the right corner with the black shorts, the pretender.....FELIX, the cat.

I actually find some of the familiars rather useful. Of course, it's not like you can't live without them... But if you want to take them out of your backpack, you really should. The cat makes an excellent scout in areas without to many traps. The bunny is great at killing off trolls (fire damage). The ferret is quite good at picking pockets. The fairy dragon gives your party another Invisible 10 radius. One of the imp's forms (can't remember the exact name, similiar to a gnoll) can damage creatures with resistance to lesser magical weapons.

Bunny rabbits rule....ever told you about that legendary battle between my familiar and a mean looking squirrel???? Blood and gore everywhere......
What a fight it was.....the ground shook in all of Faerun.....Bards will sing songs of that epic event for generations to come.....

Is the location of the find familiar spell fixed, or is it available as random loot? I am not using a mage right now, so this is just informational. I have yet to see the spell anywhere as far as I can recall (I'm still in the city on this game, though.)
I admit I am really not looking for it, either, since nobody can use it.....

Last time I played as a mage I chose the "find familiar" spell as one of my starting spells......
I'm not sure where in the game it can be found but I'm sure that I it can be found somewhere....

I guess it appears randomly in the game, just make sure you search through every chest that you can find

What exactly are the criteria for what kinds of familiars you can summon anyway? I'm a true neutral sorcerer and so far have only been able to summon a rabbit. (yeah yeah, I know Find Familiar is a crappy spell to pick for a sorcerer but I didn't care.) I guess I haven't really tried to cast it all that much. Does it depend only on one's alignment, or does location matter as well?

In my games it is always in the chest next to the machine to make the Flail of the Ages.
