Thieves

Hi. I have to start over. My pc crashed and now I have fired up my old one and installed BG on it. I started out with a fighter and Imoen. Picked up Garrick, Branwen, and Kagain (using Garrick as a pick pocket and utilitarian mage...Branwen started out as lvl 2, sweet). Dualled Immie to a conjurer now all I need is a thief. I think I want Safana since she is straight class and will level nicely but Coran has a bit more umph as a Fighter/Thief but levels slower.
I can't get the Cloakwood areas to show up on the map. Is there a certain time or certain events which impact these areas? Maybe I am stuck with Safana.
