Edwin vs Valygar

Hi Guys - thought you could go a day without hearing from me.
Well, we're off to do some side quests.
I think I might do the Planar Sphere soon ?
Problem is, I guess I need Valygar to enter.
My party setup contains all those I wanted from the start/or thought I needed = Me(Cavalier); Jaheira; Minsc; Viconia; Edwin; Jan
As you know, spellcasting isn't my forte' ... I think I actually cause myself more harm by doing the wrong thing at the wrong time :-)
I've been basicslly hacking my way thru so far.
I have read here on the forum some have solo-ed with just a Barbarian(..Wow).
So, my question is: can I sub Valygar for Edwin ?
Can I make it a permanent move ?
Does spellcasting, as per Edwin, a neccesity as we move towards the mid to end game ?
I see Valygar can dual wiekd Katanas = I saved up a few in case I add him
I much prefer to melee.

Your thoughts ?

Yes guys, I'm a bit slow :-)
Just went back to the Docks(..I like to wander) and walked past a merchant who "Basically started my romance with Jaheira" with the locket ... would have been nice to see him before I did the Dock quests etc :-(
Hopefully I picked the correct responses !

Thanks guys ... I know these questions aren't gamebreaking/taxing etc... :-)

You only need Valygar to open the Planar Sphere. Once the door is open, you can kick him out of your party without repercussions.

You can certainly kick out Edwin, instead. I like having a balanced party, but the developers made the game in such a way that you can win with any combination. So enjoy. :)

I agree with Fable. I tend to swap and change my party throughout Cahpter 2 and 3 depending on who is required for a quest, then afterwards go back to the party I prefer and continue through the main quest. Being a spell user orientated kind of player I dislike Valygar so would be inclined to use him for the Planar Sphere then simply get rid of him again.

Fable - nice to see you; again :-)

Thanks guys.
I'm going melee for the time being ... finished Umar ... going to try Temple Ruins next.
Then I don't know :-)

May wander; hit the Temple District or Planar Sphere ?
Running out of side quests.

Jeheria hasn't said a peep to me since I bought her the locket :-(
Viconia hit on me; had to turn her down.
Guess I can't win ?!
Maybe I need to return to the Main quest before Jeheria resumes her dialogue OR maybe I messed up somewhere ... unlucky in gaming; unlucky in love :-)

To advance Jaheira's romance and story, plus activate her quest, pay a visit to the tavern in the Docks District :)

I'd definitively dump Edwin for Valygar if your 'forte' isnt spellcasting.

Swapping Viconia for Anomen seems good too in this party, for roleplaying purposes, since your learder is a Cavalier travelling with 1 good, 2 neutrals characters (altough Jaheirai is arguarbly a NG char). You'll have your clerical magic, plus a(nother!) fighter. Beside, he's almost a full class cleric too, since the first few lvls of fighter he had doesnt cost him much XP.

Aerie could be another replacement choice for Viconia if you think you're melee heavy enough.

Guys - thanks for the tips/help.

The Disc 2/3 swapping got me :-)
Had a mishap swapping them = getting in/out of my wheelchair is a pain.
I almost fell, dropped the disc smack on the jewel case and put a huge gouge in it(... don't worry, I repurchased the collection should the disc become unreadable).

Anyways, I took some time off to sort how to best "play" the game.
Went back over my Diablo2 LoD strategies, some FPS strategies etc....
My party was ok, but it seemed my character wasn't involved to the extent which I would have liked.

I started over :-)
Elf-Archer ... already have Short Bow maxed ... two weapons, longsword, hammers tagged
Not sure if I'll diversify the weapons or build on these 3 categories.
My thinking was ... snipe from afar and then melee up close ... use choke points ... concentrated attacks ... hit + run
So far; so good.
Plus, I'm going with 4 party members: Me + Jeheira + Viconia + Jan
I'm hoping Jan's spells will be enough = he has the ones I use most often ... I will see if I can raise his intelligence to add higher leveled spells
Ok, I'm a guy = like to see Jeheira and Vivonia ... plus need some romance :-)
They're holding there own in melee ?!

I added tgem ASAP ... soon as I hit the slums and Copper Coronet
Basically, it's my haven for removed characters :-)

Yep, I did the Jeheira romance backasswards.
The tavern + harper quests were before the locket ... not sure if the harpoer quest is neutral or positive = didn't sound negative
This time, I gave her the locket quickly = she's still mourning/soul searching ... hope I didn't do it too soon this time

Going to do the side quests next ... Nalia etc

Hope this redo goes better :-)
Appreciate all your help !!!
Luckily, I have lots of time to experiment.
May try a spellcaster next = learn from my mistakes ?! ... leave melee to my party

Hope all this effort pays off and I don't get whopped in ToB ... my romance keeps going etc

Thanks guys.

If you have a burner (DVD or CD) you can copy all of the disc content to your hard drive and then burn all of the content to a disc (DVD) or make backup copies (CDs). That is what I have done as my kids are extremely destructive to my CDs for some reason and burning a new copy only takes a few minutes.

You can give Jaheira the locket as soon as you hit the Docks. The harper quests and the tavern in the Docks will get the romance going.

You will eventually have to choose between Jaheira and Viconia unless you have installed one of the "Happy" mods that allows you to have multiple romances.

DaemonJ - no burner.
I'll have to be more careful !

Ok, where do I find the "Happy" Mod.
I've seen references to a bunch if mods, but "Happy" doesn't ring a bell.

Do I need to start a new game if I install it ?
Do I uninstall the "Flirt" Mod ... found in a thread here at GameBanshee ?

More romances; the better :-)

Ease-of-Use Mod

Try this mod. It has a variety of things, all of which are optional so you just choose the ones you want during the installation of the mod. One of the things it adds is that it stops your party fighting or leaving if they don't like each other etc. (which is basically what people mean by a happy mod).

Guys/Mr_Sir: thanks !
The mods aren't working ?
The readme.txt says: "I don't need to start a new game".
I'm confused :-)

The mods I stalled are.........>
* NPC Flirt Package ... I believe from pocketplane(?)
Not sure if it's working because I never experienced the old scripsts. But I installed it the same way as the ease-of-use mod.

* I installed some of the ease-to-use mods.
Those I installed aren't working.
I even added a few more + re-installed the previous ones ... just re-loaded a save to check and 2 mods didn't work = so I assume none are working ?

I'm not tech savvy, so I'll explain what I did.
* downloaded the NPC Flirt Pack .zip
* then I proceeded to the Setup NPC Flirt .exe
* then I choose "0" for English and installed the scripts + hit ENTER
I just checked and it says they are installed ... do I want to uninstall etc

* downloaded the ease-of-use mod
* then proceeded to the Setup ease-of-use .exe
* went through the installation
1) "0" for English
2) installed the "Imonen" + "Party" + "Romance"(... not the "say anything mod")
3) hit ENTER

Did not work last night.
I did the Sewers/Unseeing Eye/Sculptor quests.
Returned to the Helm Temple and both Viconia and Edwin got upset and left.
My reputation hit 20.
I thought the mod prevented that from happening ?

Ok.
Went back this morning to check both Mods.
NPC Flirt: says scripts are installed
Ease-of-Use: asked me if I wanted to install those "not" installed and/or go through them all.
I went thru them all.
* I added the " No Gather Your Party Voice" mod
* I added the "Rest Anywhere" ... since I'm outside the Helm Temple, I thought this would test to see if the install took
* I re-installed all the other Mods ... "Party" + "Romance"(... not the "say anything mod")
* hit Enter
( the installation scripting said " installed so-and-so mod ... copying 1 file ... patching 1 file etc)

I've done this now 3 times :-)

So, just to check again, I reloaded the save prior to going into the Helm Temple.
* I clicked REST = said I can't rest there
* talked to the head guy, got my reputation point(s) and BOTH Viconia and Edwin went through the same outbursts and left

So, I'm lost :-)
Did I not install the mods correctly ?
Both mods (readme.txt) "NPC Flirt Package" and "Ease-of-Use" say they work with current games, no need to start a new game.
Since I'm not tech savvy, I'm wondering if I missed a step in the install.
I assumed hit "ENTER" after each mod install was all I had to do to finish the install.

Now, I guess I can play "as is", but I'll have to save before every possible rep upgrade + how can I romance Viconia if I keep kicking her out and taking her back :-) ... is she basically for those neutral or evil ? .... should I have started with a lesser rep and not chose "lawful good"
I'm onto the next Helm quest ... not even done Umar Hills ...I'm assuming many more rep upgrades ? ... do I have to keep kicking out Viconia/Edwin- then rep upgrade - then re-add them all the way through ToB

The fights were tough .. changed discs (8?) times last night ... now this = I'm getting a bit frustrated/aggravated :-)

Guys = need more help !
Hope you can wade through all the above :-)
Need any clarification OR want me to "get to the point"; just ask ... I really like this game and want to do more than one run-through ... but it's killing me physically and mentally :-)

Joe05, this thread really is attracting people who are interested in your original question. It's up to you, but I would strongly suggest you start up a new thread with that last post, asking people about mod difficulties. :)
