Has anybody played any of the Heroes of Might and Magic games? If so, then what did people think about them? I am considering buying some of the games in the series, but I am still undecided so opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I ever played Heroes of Might and Magic series before but only Heroes 3 and 5 (latest). They're mostly good if you ask me. Had some fun playing them. By the way, just one question. Can Heroes of Might and Magic be included in the Might and Magic topic? I'm not so sure if its suitable. Just asking.

There isn't a forum for Heroes of Might and Magic and, seeing as it is part of the Might and Magic franchise, it makes sense to post about it here. The same applies to Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

Edit: Moved to Non-RPG Game Discussion :)

I recommend buying the Complete version of HoMM 3, as you get the game + 2 expansion packs with the price of one. And the third version is IMO the best. Fourth is okay, after you get used to it, and I haven't played the latest. HoMM 2 is considerable investation if you find it with low price tag and it's version which supports latest Windows' and computers.

I've read somewhere that Heroes of Might and Magic is not an RPG. Said that it was more of a turn-based strategy game with RPG elements thrown in. No wonder there is no Heroes of Might and Magic thread. :)

I never could understand how to work the third one, but maybe I just didn't try hard enough (2 minutes of gameplay before giving in).

HoMM5 is pretty alright, though just the normal Might and Magic 7 was possibly the greatest.

I pretty much liked all of them except the first one(too simple)and the last one(too flashy and 3d). Homm 2 was actually the first graphic game I played so it holds a lot of sentimental value to me, saying that I have to place it just a little above the third one which was also excellent especially Armageddon's blade. Sigh... the good old days with no third dimension.

If you're buying then I'd recommend to start from the second and after that to the third because starting right from the third can be overwhelming. You can also try the first one too, I think it's abandonware or freeware.

If you like strategy and rpg then heroes of might and magic is just for you. :)

Thanks everyone. I definately think I'll look around to see if I can get HoMM 2 and 3 cheap on ebay and I'll keep an eye out for Might & Magic 7 too :)

It is unfortunate that I had disc issues with it, otherwise I'd install it on this PC and play it. :(

Heroes 5

Just a note for those buying Heroes 5. The game will not work if your My Documents folder is stored on a server (automatic backup on a domain). Ubisoft has acknowledged this, will not be fixing it, and has cited Microsoft's developers restrictions as being the reason. Here is their exact response to this issue:

"They (the developers) notified me with information that indicated that
they would not be able to change this. The game will not save correctly to or
work correctly if the My Documents folder is being stored on a network
drive and apparently this was intentional. This was called for by
Microsoft Windows XP guidelines for developers."

Incidentally, they will not refund for this and have no plans on any form of remedy. Curiously, this doesn't seem to be an issue with any other games. For example, Dungeon Siege II plays splendidly under these same conditions, and I'm pretty sure MS set up the guidelines for this game...

A friend of mine really likes HoMM 3 and doesn't much care for 4. Says it's got lousy AI and all. This isn't just my friend but also by the players in general 4 was not really popular whereas 3 was. This can also be seen in the release of HoMM 5 which in style is much more like 3 than 4. Although I don't really know much about 5.

I liked Heroes 4 more than 3. There were new elements in it. You didn't need a freaking hero to lead your troops, your hero could fight in combat, etc. But a problem in every game of heroes is that when the enemy has one town they just keep building until they can't be defeated!

I can't believe the replies this thread is getting! Where I come from, Heroes III was The Game... I don't know a single gamer that hasn't played it! To me someone asking if HOMM3 is an rpg or strategy or shooter is equal to asking if Starcraft is a Starship Troopers sequel....... Further more, there could be NO comparison with 4, which tried to copy Age of Wonders elements and totally ripped off music from Warlords Battlecry II, and especially 5, which was done in an entirely different universe, by a totally different developers team and with no desire to uphold the traditions set by NWC.
I recommend you find the Heroes III Platinum Edition (aka Heroes III Complete). It includes the two official expansion packs (Armageddon's Blade and Shadow of Death). And i also would advise against installing the Russian mod Wake of Gods, which imo ruins the great game.
Heroes III, for those who don't know, is a Turn-Based strategy game, one of the most-popular and revered games in the genre. I myself have spent hundreds of nights in front of the monitor playing it. If anyone is interested in talking HOMM, I'll be happy to..

It depends if you have already beaten the game...
Yes, for those who haven't done so yet, WoG is not a good option, but for those who have beaten the games dozens of times (like me) WoG gives some interesting additions...

I especially liked the options o customize the single scenarious, as you could make them much harder with certain selections. Also, the mithrill idea works very well, as mithrill is quite rare and you have to actually think what to upgrade...

And to linked to mithrill, the idea of upgrading the creature dwellings in the map was very good idea, as in later of the game when your hero is full of upgraded version those dwellings become meaningless. Now every dwelling may matter.

The new campaigns are also interesting, as the world at least seems to be more interactive. Okay, I admit that some of the campaigns are ultimate hard, and in some you get lost what to do next, but after all I at least enjoyed them. And it was quite fun to see some of those favourite characters' prtraits from BG2 in there as well (IIRC there were at least Minsc, Jaheira and Imoen...). And, the campaign seemed more like an adventure as there were subgoals in each map which must be completed before you can achieve the main goal. And not even close to all of those were defeating certain player or capturing certain town, as was in original campaigns...

Oh, and one of the best improvements IMO was to make the battle maps more versatile. Now, those were themed better, as in certain fights the actual map even represented the situation your hero was supposed to be...
Like if you were ambushed in undergound, in the battle map your hero and it's army was trapped in the middle of map, surrounded by obstacles and only 1 or 2 routes away, and right outside of the ring of obstacles there was hordes of enemy, mostly shooters and the routes outside was guarded by melee -typed monsters...

Also, there is more skills implemented, as well as commander who is better than basic monsters but there can only be one of those in one army. Tons of new items to be used by your hero, commander and/or by normal troops! Your troops also gained exp from each fight. At the first level hardly any creature had any special abilities, like no retalation of flying, but after few levels they ain many interesting abilities, even some which they didn't have in normal game. Your commander is also able to gain exp, and gain skills and abilites just like your hero.

So, if the old HoMM3 Complete seems bit old to you, WoG will definately make it more interestng

HoM3 was a great strategy game and defenitely better than HoM4. More balanced, more variation, kept me going for months (still picks it up every ones and a while). I haven`t played HoM5 or the two oldest. I liked HoM5 in the beginning, but it didn`t last as long as HoM3.

Thanks for all the replies :)

I've finally got HoMM3 - better late than never

Just a quick question, does it need any patches or anything like that or is it fine to play straight out of the box?

It's been many years since I last played Heroes of Might and Magic 3 but I played it straight out of the box without patches and it ran fine for me. But still, it's best to be safe than sorry. Check out this page for the Heroes of Might and Magic 3 patches.
