Light or Night Eye

The "I can't see thread" reminded me of something I've wondered before. Which do people generally prefer, Light on Self or Night Eye?

I tend to prefer Light; usually I put about 30 points on an item at Constant Effect, and it brightens up caves, ruins etc. very nicely. The reason I like Light better is because it doesn't wash out the game colours as much. Also, it seems to reflect off of surfaces, which gives a nice effect.

I prefer Night Eye instead of light. It makes everything easier to see, which light, in my oppinion doesn't do a very good job of. I use Night Eye with on a constant effect item. For some reason though, if I'm correct, it's much costlier to give an item the constant light property than a constant Night Eye property.

On emore thing, Night Eye basically lets you see in the dark, with your own eyes, where as light only illuminates an area in a certain radiues and I find that quite annoying as I like to see everything as well as I can during the day.

I've tried Light on Self but it rarely seems to have any effect. I don't know what the problem is, but if I do Light on target it only works about 1/3 of the time (not failed to cast, but it will cast but no light) and I've never seen an improvement from Light on Self. So I stick with Night Eye.

Get a torch or lantern. They're cheap and take no magicka.

Night Eye myself, I tend to find light does weird and stupid things with my video card. I also prefer to see further into the distance, which Night Eye affords, Light does not.

Hmm... I find that light on self makes a big difference.. and I'm using Darker Morrowind too this time. The amulet I had created makes the difference between a pitch black ruin and a space I can see clearly in.

Granted, unlike Night Eye, it doesn't light everything up, you can't see things further away. But, that is partly why I prefer Light, it feels slightly more realistic.

Personal preferences ! :D

@Ebonwyrm,
torches and lanterns aren't as convenient. They don't last all that long, they go out if you traverse water, and assuming you use shields, you can't block while holding something like a lantern or torch. Besides, an item enchanted with constant effect Light or Night Eye doesn't use any magicka... and in this game... finding the cash to have one made is not especially difficult.

My processor seemed to always have troubles with the Light effect for some reason. Rarely did it ever work. So when I needed to I used lanterns (actually roleplaying a broke warrior who had to steal them from shacks in Hla Oad), but Night Eye has never given me problems.

Light vs Night-Eye

I've always operated under the assumption that Light works similar to a torch in that it lights up the affected area equally for you as well as your prey. If true you lose any tactical advantage if your enemies can see you as well as you can see them. I also assumed that Night-Eye was a personal trait/power that only affects and benefits the user of the spell/enchantment. For this reason I've never used Light unless I had no choice, like in the early stages of the game where torches and lanterns are your only source of illumination. I always play with a CE Night-Eye item as soon as I can make one - often a robe, shirt or belt.

Light spell - makes stuff green

Torches/lanterns - no block/2 handed weapons

Night eye - no obvious disadvantages

I prefer Light. It shows up everything. I usually cast it on my character with a 2 minute timespan. Not pretty, but it works well.

Like Uncle S., I've always assumed Light disbales sneaking. For me, that's not an option. I don't want the people I'm robbing to see me. That would make it dangerous!

So, roleplaying it: nice. :) I seem to recall that there's a mod which actually does what you ask: Light-Based Sneaking.

@Fable: thank you. I have that mod but I've always hesitated to install it. People seem to like it and from what I've read about it, so should I (I'm a big fan of Eidos' THIEF-series), but if I understand correctly it'll make sneaking a lot harder. Since my current pc doesn't have many skills to defend himself with it could make life maybe too hard for him.
Also, there are a few problems with the mod(like sneaking penalties that stay with you until you change cells, and, apparently, a big drain on your CPU. Also, using it with saved games might produce problems so I'd have to start another game - again. :/).

Night eye tends to work better during the day and in dark places like dwemer ruins for me, but i have a dark t.v. screen.

also night eye works better with other spells like chameleon and telekenisis because it doesnt limit the distance you can see (and be seen) and wont give you away because of a bright light if your invisible or chameleoned(?)

I like Light but I usually cast in on moving targets, mostly for fun, especially with mudcrabs ... I know I'm strange.

@ Coot

I've never experienced the drain on the CPU, but yes I've found that the mod does have a tendency to produce lingering penalties.

There is also a weather based sneaking mod ... somewhere Planet ES I think.

all things being equal i prefer night eye, however it's a much "larger" effect to enchant with compared to light.

so at times i'll use a ce light item.

I never use either

i ususlaly play morrowind in th dark so theres hardly ever a point when a need extra light. i tihnk once or twice when my room is particularl ylight i would like to have had a decent light spell or sometihng but generally i dont need them.

I prefer Night Eye. It doesn't reveal your position to enemies, brightens up everything brilliantly, and allows for easy sneaking. Light doesn't go all that far, and enemies can see you. Night eye was my favorite spell with my Khajiit. I have yet to put it in an item, but I assume it would rock.

Post removed. Nobody's asking how to enchant Light or Night Eye. Everybody knows. We want opinions of which you prefer, and why. :)

after experimewenting eith both, i prefer light.

night-eye just looks like youve turned up the brightness, which you may as well just do. id rather use light as it seems more real and less like youve cheated by editing brightness..
