Most useful potion? I haven't found much use for a lot of them other than speed, giant strength and health/healing. Other findings?

Probably don't need them much. I have one character with every item slot filled with various potions. I have been hording them, but have never had a need for them. I will keep a few just in case I get stuck. Not to say there aren't some powerful potions, I have just been able to use a spell for the same effect whenever necessary.

Potion of genius adds like 5 pts to your int...not much use for your main char..but definately a big help for aerie and nalia...cause they can learn more spells with the higher int.

yes but Aerie and Imoen are of less int so they cant learn all the spells since the potion bost the int as long the potion last they can learn all spells(as a 18 or + would) and they are very useful againt the "brain suking" mindflayer attack.

ah, and since I don't have either of them in my party, I'm probably fine without it. I keep my party simple:
PC: Mage
Jaheira
Yoshimo
Minsc (w/boo)

sounds good. I like Yoshimo's traps & snares, and his archery with the Tungian Bow and bracers of archery, and of course boo is hard to beat.

Imoen also can benefit from the Potion of Genius. I've seen several times people recommending to be careful what spells you learn for given levels -- just learn them all and use the potions.
Also: Potion of Mind Focussing -- Potion of Genius PLUS Dex bonus.
For Kensai: Potion of Defense -- Full Plate Mail in a bottle.

potion of master thievery is excellent for a low level thief. healing potions are great for the heat of battle, but only the stronger ones

Well for me the potion of magic shielding is THE most usable potion in the game. For three whole turns you make every saving throw, thus making you proof against everything that allows saving throws at all. Fear no poison, mindmagic, paralyzation, sudden death or other ill and foul things that could befall your precious characters.

I drink a shed load of potions before big fights - deal out more damage, receive fewer wounds and keeps those slots free. Oh, and sell the naff ones - potions are quite expensive.

Only use the Genius ones. Combat enhancements are provided by cleric/mage spells.
Master thievery? Oh, if you can't pick it, knock it!

What will the potion of genius actually do for you? I have played thru BGI, TSOC, and BGII and I have never used one. I realize that it raises your intelligence for a while, but I fail to see how that could be of real use. Please fill me in on what I a missing here.

It increases % chance learning spells. It lets you write more spells than you normally could (but not memorize - it doesn't last long enough).
For BG2 it helps you against Vs the brain-sucking Illithids.
@Black hand. I say *write*, not memorize.

Intelligence is only important for mages. Their intelligence determines the learning probability of spells, as well as the maximum number of spells they can have per spell-level. If the mages intelligence is 19 and above he can learn all spells available, so thats the use of Genius potions.
@Gruntboy:
Intelligence does not influence the number of spells a mage can memorize at all. This works only with clerics/druids and wisdom. The only effects are those I mentioned above.

Ok.
You are limited by the INT score to a munber of spells that you can learn. at 19 INT you can learn all spells,a example a 15 INT mage can not learn more lv1 spells but the mage have found a "protection from evil" spell so he drinks a potion of genius and get a 20 Int for a limeted time and now he can learn that spell.
A potion not in the game a potion of greater endurance for bed time with viconia.
