Pearl of Power

A question regarding Pearls of Power has come up in the game I play in (we play 3.5 if that matters).

Should there be a limit to the number of Pearls of Power a character can possess and use?

The DMG makes no reference to any type of limit on carrying these things.

I personally think that there should be a limit to carrying a maximum of one of each power level....or technically, using one of each power level per day.

We currently have a munchkin player who runs around with a sack full of these things....it just seems a bit unbalancing.

As pearl of power is a per day single use item, and it doesn't require any body part to wear them as you don't wear them, you can have as many as you want and they will all work on a same given day.

But by the time you've bought enough pearl's, you could have afforded a ring of wizardry anyways.

Good point on the cost of the pearls vs. the cost of a Ring of Wizardry, but....
  • You can wear only two Rings of Wizardry at any given time...you can cary as many Pearls of Power as you can afford.
  • Rings of Wizardry use up a slot on "wearing magic items"...thus limiting your capacity to use other magic items.
  • A Ring of Wizardry doubles the spells you have memorized...so if you memorize magic missile once, you get to cast it twice wearing a ring...but if you had a dozen Pearls of Power you could cast it as many as thirteen times!
  • Rings of Wizardry only work for arcane spells...Pearls of Power work for divine and arcane spells.
Pearls of Power just seem to be a bit too versatile and efficient to no come with some sort of restriction.

its really a case of the DM controling the amount available to pcs , if it unbalance's the group your DM should redress the balance as unbalanced groups are not much fun for those pcs who are under powerd.
