Rules question and game effects

I have noticed that there are two staves in the game that are functionally one-handed weapons, but are each considered a "staff" for proficiency, i.e 2-handed. (staff-mace and staff-spear.)
1) can you dual-wield these two items together?
2) do you recieve the "2-handed weapon" proficiency bonus with one or both of them?
(this would give you the +1 damage bonus, criticals on 19 or 20, and some speed factor reduction on each weapon....)
If so, this would seem to be a pretty awesome dual-wield combination (at least until you start facing monsters that require a +3 or better weapon to hit on a regular basis....)

Is the staff-spear one handed? Both staff&spear are 2handed weapons so the staff-spear is 2 handed is it not? The staff-mace is defintiely one handed. Good question though
I considered this for bastard swords. If you have single weapon and 2-handed weapon proficiency and you hold a bastard sword with no shield, how is it counted (I presume as one handed, though the bastard sword technically is both - "hand and a half").
Rules, rules, rules.

I've checked it out before, both the staff- spear and the staff-mace use the 2-handed quarterstaff skill, but are one-handed weapons in use. You can use a shield with either one.
I have had them both, just not at the same time.
Bastard swords do not have a "choice: 1 or 2 handed" option within BG2 as far as I know. I think they are considered 1-handed.

Strange, in ToSC the staff-spear was 2 handed.
Bastard sword would be good if you could select its ability (like melee/throwing for hand axes).
Umm... you seem to have answered you r own questions.
Unless... does the dual-wielding override any 2-handed bonuses (in theory you can't dual wield a 2 handed weapon). Or does the game apply this?
Try it out I guess - see if you get a ridiculous number of crits when dual wielding.

I guess that's the fix, eh? Like I said, I have not tried using them together. On top of that, this looks tailor-made for Jaheira, if only she knew how to dual wield.......as it is, she would not be able to hit anyhing with no skill dualling.
You'd pretty much need to make a protagonist with dual wielding and quarterstaff skill to try it out. Sounds perfect for that Ranger/Cleric we were talking about last night....+++ dual wield, ++ quarterstaff, ++ two-handed weapon skill.
By the way, good day to you, Gruntboy....how's the hospital today? 7am here, and slow as usual....

Oh... my... god... Your right - that would be kick-a! When I rolled my character I laughed at Q-staves. Might re-think that.
Hospital is fine thanks. Its not going to collapse without me

. Must do some work at a point.
Had any calls for support?

No calls since about 2am. That should change, soon.
The nice thing about quarterstaffs is that there is a lot of variety in the types that are available...good bonuses, lots of different ones with unique abilities. A deeper pool than most other weapons. Consider the numerous weapon types where there is really only one or two good examples.

I stand corrected.
After going home yesterday, I played my current game long enough to get Xzar killed and claimed his staff-spear. It is indeed a 2-handed weapon, while the staff-mace is one handed.
Still, I am wondering if the Staff-mace gets to benefit from the 2-handed weapon skill, specifically causing criticals on 19 and 20? Jaheira does not yet have this skill in my party, anyone else ever notice whether this is the case??
