Okay, what am I not doing? I buy the haunted house, sleep in it, travel to the Imperial City to convince the previous owner to help with dear old grand dad...And then he refuses?? What now??

Now, you should read the sticky thread cleverly disguised by placing it at the top of the forum and labeled HEY, YOU! so you wouldn't find it--and put a SPOILER tag on any thread like this. I'll change this one, but in the future, if you don't want your threads to suddenly vanish, you'll be expected to take the initiative.

No, you can have him hate you if I remember right. Go back to the house and get the note and the hand. Then go talk to him again and he will come. I had the same problem and played for about 20 more hours before I figured it out.
