Flame Tongue

Is there a reason the Flame Tongue sword can't be used to finish off trolls? Or is this an error in the game? After all, it is on fire, isn't it?
The only thing that would even suggest that the sword itself is actually on fire is the name, but that doesn't mean it actually is.
It does +2 vs regenerating creatures, +3 vs cold/fire creatures, and +4 vs undead, but it does not do any "extra" fire damage or extra damage of any kind. Therefore, it cannot be used to finish off trolls.
One thing that wasn't mentioned in the game is that damage-over-time poison weapons can be used to kill trolls, such as Valygar's family blade, an assassin's poison weapon ability, and a few other weapons throughout the game.
