Soloing.

I've been thinking this for a little time.
Everyone talks about soloing and I think it would be great to try. You get to high level fast if I can imagine right ?
But then the other point.
Let's think that I'm soloing Bard ... / okay I would't, but let's assume that I am and I have to go and kill Firgraak
Is this possible even in theory ?? Or Jon in Hell ?
Tell me. Is there anyone who has played BGII thru soloing ? Did you have to use NPC's against Firgraak and the shadow dragon ?

the tougher battles require some level of cheese usually...with the dragons in SOA, you have the advantage of them not being enemies at first. so you can do all sorts of things to get ready. and there is always the cheesey cloudkill trick.
also, not every battle has to be fought. when soloing, you really just need to follow the main story line and do the quests you want to do for certain items.

I have soloed with an assassin, and for the most part it was easier than with a large party, even with the xp cap.
The only battles that required cheese were the 'optional' dragon fights like Firkaag and Adalon. You can also make use of the slayer form where required. The toughest battle for my solo assassin was the altar in Suldanesselar with the mage, pit fiend, rakshasa and iron golem because I couldn't lure them outside. The slayer made short work of them, tho.
The battles in hell, tree of life, Bodhi's lair etc were easy, using standard assassin tactics of hit, run, stealth and hit again.

Just my two cents ... All of you, except a couple, probably know these things already.
Killing those 'optional' dragons & main bosses is way too easy if you just know the right tactic (not talking about cloudkilling firkraag etc.). f.eg. agains firkraag I mean, with a bard (a blade hopefully?) just summon some hasted skeleton warriors & use imp. bard song while casting offensive spells at him and (he'll be a wet spot on the ground before no-time). Or you could do the standard defensive spells & tensors and whack him to pieces. Or you could him with spike- / explosive- / skulltrap combo etc. etc.
Then there's our beloved friend Jon - who becomes waaaay too easy with ToB installed. Just make sure you don't get imprisoned and you'll be fine, hence your saves are so good that most of the stuff he casts doesn't affect you & the rest you can avoid by preparations. (19th level Keldorn can kill Jon by himself - he probably doesn't even need to be 19th level). If you use a PC who can cast wizard spells (like bard) 2-3 nishruu's are usually anough to defeat him.
btw. Bard's are the ultimate power char's for any party. Generally they can do most good & are the most versatile single-class char's in the game.
read a few strategy guides + there has been many great & accurate journal's in this forum from where you can get new ideas & tactics.

Bard's are really that good? Damn, I was hoping I was through with this game, but never played as that class....

I'm soloing at the moment, and I must say that (if you choose your quests right, don't mind some powergaming and are a bit BG-savvy) it's ridiculously easy so far.
I wonder how it will be later in the game. On one side, the XP cap (just reached it) will put a serious damper on my ability to grow (as opposed to a full party that can keep growing up until right before the end). On the other side, more powergaming goodies (Staff of the Magi, anyone?) should make my life a lot easier.

I think when you're soloing you really learn to use your character's abilities to their full potential. I used to play 6 person parties, and in many battles I had someone idle not doing much. These days I much rather have a small party of 3 or max 4 people or just go solo for most of the games. That said, I'm glad I played with most of the NPCs for at least part of the game because their interactions and quests are very cool.

If you really want to enjoy the game, make a character that isn't uber powerful, then role play him/her.
Right now I have a paladin using a quarter staff and who only accepts good comrades and always helps those in need. It makes the game so much more challenging. Good fun
