Ok i have made a post myself and read many posts which all have more than less the same title - The best RPG ever - and it includes games like KotOR, baldurs gate, diablo, dungeon siege, jade empire and of course fable!!!
In all of the most people seem to agree that fable is the best. I must go with them on that one!!!
It's an all round best with no problems!!!
Put your name down if you think Fable and is the best RPG ever and that Lionhead should go along and make another add on/expansion kind of thing or Fable 2!!!!
Heres my name for starters

I played Fable: The Lost Chapters and found it good, though not great. Its also quite short for an RPG too. Pity. If it was longer, it would be much better. Nonetheless, its still fun to play.

There are original elements in the game, not all but some. But, for Peter Molyneux's first attempt at developing an RPG, I can say that he did a swell job, even though its kind of simplistic for an RPG but the simplicity of the game did attract new players not familiar to the RPG genre and that's what I applaud him for. Now if Lionhead would just add some depth to the gameplay elements in Fable 2, it would be most welcome indeed.

Fable 2
is already in development. If you want to know more about it, you can head over to the Fable 2 thread.

A very subjective question which you can only recive subjective answers, but my answer would be:
No way on this earth is Fable anywhere near the best RPG.
The games liniarity, the fact that there are very few choices and next to no consequnces, a run-of-the-milll story with no suprises, rather short playtime, with useless graphical fluff such as ageing and scarring, makes Fable

TLC) a mediocre RPG at best. Not even close to classics such as Fallout, Baldurs Gate, PlaneScape Torment - or newer games such as the KOTOR sereis, or the Elder Scroll series.
Fable is a drop in the sea of fluffed RPG-lites which promises a lot but never delivers on anything.
It was not even close to being the best RPG, never.

Is fable the best RPG ever?
Good god no, stereotypical introduction, automatic targeting with certain spells (which can target people you don't want and turn you evil), boring weapons and armor, save game functions sucked, not even close.
I personally don't like Vanilla Oblivion (Vanilla = unmodded) but even that is better than fable.
Names of Great RPG's that have surpassed fable in all my expectations-
D&D
Dungeon Siege 2
Icewind dale 2
Icewind dale
Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 + expansions
The eye of the beholder
Every final fantasy game
Diablo
Diablo 2 and LoD
Sacred
Titan Quest
Kult: Heretic
Morrowind, Bloodmoon, and Tribunal
Oblivion
Dreamfall the Longest Journey
Wizardry 6, 7, and 8
Might and magic 7, 8, and 9
Neverwinter Nights + SoU + HoTU
KoTOR 1 and 2
All of those surpassed fable with my expectations. My expectations have been lowered due to games being made for kids, I try to at least enjoy it even if the game is cliche, but fable is probably the worst of the worst to me. Dungeon lords I didn't like either.
So no, Fable is definitely not even close to the best.
BTW- In the "Favorite RPG of all Time" thread right below this-
10 votes on fable being a "Good" game, and IIRC 2 of them being the best (Number 1).
SO many more for Morrowind and Baldurs gate 2.
I just went through and counted them myself.

There is no way Fable is the best RPG I've ever played. Its fun, yes, and I'm glad I played it but I'm also glad I got it quite cheap second hand as I'd hate to have had paid full price for it. Its very short, far too linear, the story is not really all that indepth, there is little variation in quests or enemies. It lacks everything that games like Baldur's Gate: Shadows of Amn and other classic RPGs have which makes them special.

I didn't care for Fable at all. As far as the best RPG of all time, I can think of a vast amount of games I would rank ahead of Fable. I just didn't really like any aspect of the game.

Nope. One of the worst in my opinion. Good enough to play about 8 times, but mainly to hear the music.

Erm. How many times did you play the game?

For someone who don't replay games, I only played it twice and that's it. Couldn't be bothered to play it again. Actually, I can't be bothered to play all games more than once, be it open-ended or linear.

Why? What made it stand out as the best RPG ever?

From what I saw of the game, it was like Conkers Bad Fur Day in a middle aged fantasy setting.

Agreed, telling us that "FABLE RULES!" and then pretty much nothing else doesn't give us a convincing argument.

I liked Fable, and played it through 1.5 times, but then tried to replay and got bored because it is very linear and limited ... oh, and short.
It is good, but I wouldn't put it in my top 20 RPG's. And it is lacking in the action department to compare to action games like Rune or Blade of Darkness ...

Short and linear. I can easily think of two dozen RPGs that I prefered to it.

I've had it since it came out. that would be how I managed to play it that much.

I bought it the day it came out. Finished it in a week/week and a half. Terribly disappointed. I tried playing it again as an "evil" character a week later - realized I was more disappointed with the game than I had originally thought. Haven't played it since. Didn't bother with the expansion either.
In fact, I probably like it the least out of all the rpg/fantasy games that I have bought. Which must be around 15 - 20 games.
(note: this isn't meant to be rude)

What do you mean Fable/Fable: TLC is the best? Everyone knows Morrowind is!

There's no single "best," because there is no objective way of measuring this. It's all based on personal experience, expectations, desires, etc. But in most respects, Fable seems to be lacking: very short, very linear, lots of fluff but little depth. A good RPG, for me, pulls you into the story, brings the characters to life, throws you genuine curves, has plenty of people who don't act like simpletons or 10-year-olds, and challenges you mentally.
