How many rogue levels do you need in this game before they start to become wasted levels you could have used on another class?
and to sneak attack all you have to do is attack from behind? can you just use way points to get behind then attack? can this be done all in one round- get behind and attack- or is it two seperate actions, taking two turns?

I'm not sure how many Rogue Levels are needed, but I'd get at least enough for Envenom Weapon. That skill is brilliant.
Another thing about Rogues is that they are excellent at doing the thiefy stuff, scouting (more so than Rangers, I believe), and while they don't have the hit points, they DO have Sneak Attack.

Not sure how Sneak Attack works, but if you get a Ranger Level for the Ambidexterity and the Two Weaponed Fighting, then whenever you Backstrike, do it with two Magical Shortswords and kick some bootie. I believe it is how you described it though, but I've only ever used my Rogue as an expert bow-Halflingwoman...
I think 10 Levels of Rogue, 1 Level of Ranger, and 4 Levels of Fighter is enough (Bow Mastery and Short Blade Mastery (Possibly, anyway). After that I think that going for something like a few Levels in Cleric would be funny... actually, I'll do that in my next go around... a Rogue/Cleric... heh

A high int wizard gets enough skill points to handle lockpicking and trapfinding, anyone can hide in shadows, so no rogue level is needed at all.
But rogues can be strong, especially pure ones.
You get extra 1-6 sneak attack damage for each two rogue levels, no other class levels offer such a damage increase.
The BAB increases nearly as fast as the fighter's.

I like making a Wizard who has 1 or 2 levels of Rogue. That's usually enough.

There is no answer to this question as rogues are not a necessity in this game, therefore it all boils down to ersonal preference and playing style.

I think 10 Levels of Rogue, 1 Level of Ranger, and 4 Levels of Fighter is enough (Bow Mastery and Short Blade Mastery (Possibly, anyway).
You'd also get a nice 20% exp penalty - even if playing as a human or half-elf.
