Bonuses with High Character Stats

Well I always thought that with 20 or higher in any stat would result in some sort of bonus or special perk, so through various means I've permanently raised my constitution of my wizardslayer(dualed to)thief to 21 constitution.

Now aren't I supposed to gain inate regeneration ability??? Could it be that my stats are wasted because my character's current class is a thief and not a fighter anymore? Or could it be some other reason (unmodded ToB patched game).

What are the other supposed benefits or gains from having extremely high stats in the game?

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Normal AD&D has many bonuses/penalties to higher/lower ability scores. This is what I've come to understand was implemented in the BG games:

- Higher STR will give higher bonuses to melee THAC0, melee damage, and carrying capacity (and bashing locked containers open?).

- Higher DEX will give higher bonuses to missile THAC0, and armor class. For thieves (and bard's pickpocketing?), it also gives higher bonuses to thieving abilities.

- CON of 15 will give 1 additional hit point per level (up to level 9 or 10, depending on class), and 16 will give you 2 more hit points per level. Only warriors get higher hit point bonuses per level for CON scores above 16. CON of 20 or more allow for varying rates of regeneration (warriors only?). The higher the CON, the faster the rate of regeneration.

- Higher INT will give a higher bonus to your Lore score. For wizards, it also determines how many wizard spells can be in your spellbook per level, as well as the % chance to copy a spell into your spellbook.

- Higher WIS will give a higher bonus to your Lore score. For priests, it will also allow memorizing additional spells.

- Higher CHA makes for lower prices with merchants.

The higher (or lower) the score, the higher bonus (or penalty) the character gets. Of course, you could check out the end of the game manual for details. :)

In Planescape:Torment, INT, WIS, and CHA are widely checked in dialogues and other situations. Unfortunately, ability checks in dialogues are rare (or at least rarer) in the BG games.

Anyone correct anything incorrect herein.

Bragging rights and a sense of fulfillment few people ever attain in the real world. :)

But seriously, nearly all of the benefits of high stats are spelled out clearly in the manual. The manual is wrong about saving throw bonuses for high Wisdom (they were not implemented), and I don't think automatic hit point regeneration for high Constitution is mentioned. (Regeneration occurs at a rate of about one hit point per minute, so it's not easy to see in real time, but you recover full hit points when you rest for 8 hours without casting spells, which is really nice.) But things like bashing percentages for high Strength and reaction bonuses for high Charisma are right there on the ability charts.

Bill Gates as Kangaxx?

the anti-trust mages obviously managed to divide Microsoft into various golden parts - then look what happens - some daft PC puts them back together again.

tsk!

Is that confirmed anywhere? I can't recall the last time I played something with 20 or more CON, so I can't speak out of experience, but I don't recall seeing anyone else ever mentioning this.

20+ CON does net you regeneration, but it's slow.

You'll notice it when travelling between areas that are hours apart, mostly. When you go to sleep it's noticable too.

Well I'm pretty sorely dissappointed, from all the hype I was expecting inate ring of Gaxx but really it wasn't worth my time...

To think I could've be immune to +1 weapons or lower.

How about 25 con in Ps:T? That's a good 6 hp/s or something ^^
