BG2 to NWN

"The adventure doesn't have to end once you have finished BG2. Neverwinter Nights will allow you to import your BG2 character."
This is what one of the loading screens said.
Now, I know that there may have been other topics about this, and infact those that I have seen were vague and didn't really answer my questions.
1.) Is this actually possible?
2.) If it is possible, how is it done? (The process of importing a BG2 character into NWN.)
3.) If it is not possible, why would the loading screen say this?

It's not possible. The developers put that message into BG2 when they thought that NWN would use the same Infinity engine.
As it turned out, they used, I believe, the Aurora engine instead, and thus your Player Character can't be transferred over to NWN.
Too bad.... Had they stuck with the older engine NWN might have actually ended up a better game.

I don't recall ever coming across something like this the first time Neverwinter Nights was announced. I agree with Dragon Wench that its not possible to do so, given the different engine used in Neverwinter Nights.

Just one question. Was Neverwinter Nights based on the same setting as Baldur's Gate?

I thought they were in completely different settings even though they're based on the same D&D world.

They are both based in the same world, in fact Neverwinter is a city that is to the North of Baldur's Gate and is mentioned frequently in the games. As is Waterdeep (which is where the HOTU expansion for NWN starts). They are also quite similar time periods, at least thats the impression I got from playing the games.

BG2 and NWN use different rules.
2,000,000 XP in 2e is very different from 2,000,000 XP in 3e.
Equal stat values have different meanings.
Dual- and multiclassing works totally different.
Even if importing was possible it wouldn't make sense.

The engine doesn't matter really, but it's a huge difference between 2nd and 3rd edition, as kmonster said. Stats, exp, and classes are given and calculated in an entirely different way. Importing from BG2 wouldn't make sense.
