runaway ex-slave

I set a slave free in my balmora house under the assumption she would stay there, and she did not (was gone after I exited my house and came back in). Is there any way to prevent that or have I lost my slave forever?

Seriously, I'm pretty sure she's gone for good. The only way to prevent that is to not set them free.
If you are lonely, you might try using a command spell and leading some NPCs of your choosing into your house.
Or, if you are on PC, you could try the many companion mods available.

100% positive she's gone. Setting them free means, well they're free. They no longer have to listen to you. So they just stroll off.
Look at the bright side, your reputation's gone up!
