Thieves Guild Quest help (spoiler)

I'm sort of stuck, in a quest. The very last one for the Thieves Guild, the Ultimate Heist. I got through all of it so far, I've gotten the Elder Scroll and I got out, back into the Imperial City. But now, I have a problem. I have a 500 gold bounty, and I can't just drop my stolen items to pick up later because of the quest item. I only have two, 17 second invisibility spells. I'm standing just outside of The Best Defense, and if I move, a guard always sees me. I tried fast travelling to Bravil to have the bounty taken off of my head, but the guards at the gate always catch me before I can take an invisibility spell.
Any ideas?

Are you close enough to the door of Best Defence to active/enter it without moving? If so, go inside and wait for a bit.
Then, SAVE, and go outside again. If no guards come running, then fast travel out of there! But NOT to a location in the city.
(If you are not close enough to the door, just stand still in Sneak mode and wait for guards to get past you. It helps if you have items/potions of Chameleon and Sneak).
Either way:
Not far from the Waterfront is Dzonot cave. Head for that. If you haven't located it on your map yet, go to the sewer exit opposite Vilvarin, where you first emerged from the original dungeons. In this case, you will have a much longer walk ahead of you to get to Waterfront.
From either location, swim to the Waterfront, timing yourself to arrive just before midnight. Come onto land just behind the House for Sale (Your House if you bought it) - DON'T fast travel to Waterfront! Just before you hit the shore, go into Sneak and go find Armand Cristophe in his usual place. Ask him about lifting your bounty. As soon as that is done, take the scroll to Grey Fox.

if your not worried about a bounty try to outrun them to the nearest horse and just steal it and you should be able to outrun any guard to your destination.
if your hero is strong enough then just try running by them and getting to a horse.

I personally always run to the lake, then cast water breathing and hide there on the bottom. They always go away after a while, it's a sure thing, then I just sneak in to see Armand and lift my bounty.

By 'lake', do you mean the two strips of water with flowers behind the opposite side to the shops?
How do you manage to get a Bounty on your heads anyway? Do you steal stuff when people can see you?

I've had two characters now go through the Thieves Guild to the top, and never yet had a bounty. I've even picked the pockets of guardsmen and taken their bows, and not been seen or caught at it. If you have a decent level of Sneak, go into full Sneak mode (which means walking sneak not running sneak), and, preferably but not essentially, wear shoes not boots, you shouldn't EVER get a Bounty!
PS: it is also handy to have the Illusion spell Chameleon, but it isn't essential by any means. I did my first TG game without it.

The lake around the Imp. City, it's handy in the sense of well Armand is right there at night so I just creap out and problem solved.
It's strange really, the picking up of bounties. I had several up to now and some of those were totally weird in the sense of I know no-one saw me, and yet I picked it up. It was on the DB quests, not TG. Very strange. Of course one of those was completely earned, I was in full view of couple of guards but I wanted something done quickly, knew I had a full proof system for bounties and couldn't care less about trying to hide. Sometimes that's fun too

.
Thanks a bunch, everybody. I fast-travelled to Sardavar Leed (Dzonot Cave wasn't on my map), then snuck into the Waterfront.
Earlier, I tried to just run in and get S'krriva (dunno if I spelled that right lol) to lift the bounty, but even when I did that, the guards would follow me in and still try to kill me lol.
I got the bounty from the the Ultimate Heist, I had to kill a few guards on the way out. By the way, when you're an Expert in Sneak, the boots you wear don't affect you, and neither does walking vs. running, so I didn't need to worry about that.

As good as anywhere.

Dzonot is just a
lot closer.

Yeah well, if ever a town had handy guards right close to your doyen's house...!

Yeah, of course. But even so I have found it is best to walk-sneak in some places, even with over 100 Sneak (item-boosted to 112). AND I wear shoes in those situations! Probably don't need to, but I do.
And my sneaky chars have never been caught doing ANYTHING illegal! Not a single bounty on their heads EVER, and never had to run away from guards out for their blood!
How come you had to kill guards on the way out?
Did they spot you crossing the room to the hearth-exit?
