What quests to avoid in a no reloads game?

Post by Klorox »

ust curious. What quests are just too risky to attempt in a game where you won't allow yourself a reload?

What quests will you not do without a certain amount of equipment?

That of course depends on *when* quests would be undertaken and what the party composition is. Assuming you have a generally well-balanced party, I'd say the only ones you might avoid are the ones which the game actually gives warnings that you should probably avoid them or at least options to avoid a fight. Namely:

-Liches
-Firkraag and Shadow Dragon: If you're confident with dragon killing, it's probably fine to go back for them in Ch.6.
- Mencar Pebblecrusher's gang: Again, don't avoid altogether but get some levels under your belt.
- Capt. Dennis' gang: Same as Mencar, just be nice for awhile.
- Sewers gang: Same deal again. You'll have to pay them off to avoid a fight if you go down there. If you're not ready, perhaps just go there after blowing all your money on items.
- Beholder/Mind Flayer lairs in Underdark. I've never really had a problem with them in the vanilla game but the Kuo'Toa is certainly the easiest of the three options pertaining to the Ust'Natha quest.
- Twisted Rune
- Drizzt's party

Naturally, these are among the most fun encounters in the game so avoiding them completely would probably dampen whatever extra enjoyment you get from the no reloads. I'd say that if you aren't familiar enough to know already exactly what to expect and what you might need, just take the time to heed whatever advice NPCs give you or information you might come across about your potential battles, and respond to that knowledge as though, well, your life depended on it.

You *could* just take the long route. ;)

I suppose as long as you rest after each battle, carry resurrection products and use every single buffing spell, most of the battles should easily be possible.

Resting so much would make those battles boring though.

**Possible spoilers**

With good buffing and pre battle prep (positioning) you can beat a good number of those tough encounters early on. The Dennis and Pebblecrusher gangs are a bit tough because of the restricted space in those encounter areas. But with the sewer gang you have a LOT of room for manuevering and they can be taken down a little easier if you use that your advantage. Don't get sucked into engaging that whole group on "their" terms. Don't walk up to them with the entire party, make them come to you. Prepositioning the party is very key. **spoiler** Depending on who you have in your party keep members back out of sight who can cast web and/or entangle, preferably both. Arm any other members with missle weapons and keep them back. Use any buff spells like Protection from Evil, Defensive Harmony, Mirror Image, Stoneskin, etc. Then have just one party member approach them. As soon as you tick the spokesperson off and they go hostile, RUN your speaker back down the tunnel towards your group and have your spell casters throw entangle and web into the area your speaker just vacated. The gang will follow and run right into "your" trap. I use both because it requires two saves by each of the gang members to cross that same ground. If you have Yoshimo in the party he can set some traps as well "just note where they are and run around them when running back down the tunnel". One or two of the gang might make both saves but better that than to go into melee with all of them. Your spell casters can then toss fireballs, glyphs of warding, holy smites, magic missles or any other nastiness on the trapped gang members. Anyone not in melee can contribute bullets, bolts, or arrows to their downfall. The loot from taking them down goes a long way to getting your party better equipped.
